You can't be married to someone without sometimes wanting to kill them...

As Long As We Both Shall Live is JoAnn Chaney's wicked, masterful examination of a marriage gone very wrong, a marriage with lots of secrets.

"My wife! I think she's dead!" Matt frantically tells park rangers that he and his wife, Marie, were hiking when she fell off a cliff into the raging river below. They start a search, but they aren't hopeful: no one could have survived that fall. It was a tragic accident.

But Matt's first wife also died in suspicious circumstances. And when the police pull a body out of the river, they have a lot more questions for Matt.

Detectives Loren and Spengler want to know if Matt is a grieving, twice-unlucky husband or a cold-blooded murderer. They dig into the couple's lives to see what they can unearth. And they find that love's got teeth, it's got claws, and once it hitches you to a person, it's tough to rip yourself free.

So what happens when you're done making it work?

JoAnn Chaney is a graduate of UC Riverside's Palm Desert MFA program. She lives in Colorado with her family. She is the author of What You Don't Know, which was longlisted for the Crime Writers' Association's John Creasey (New Blood) Dagger Award and was one of BookRiot's Best Mysteries of the Year, and As Long As We Both Shall Live.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent! A must read! "If you try to kill your wife without a plan, you will fail." Talk about an attention grabbing opening. This book is nothing but excellent. It had me sitting on the edge of my seat from the very start. It skillfully keeps the twisty story on track through convincing characters and domestic details, right up to the shocking ending. The story is full of twists, secrets, lies and deception. The author makes the reader believe one thing and then quickly turns the table and the reader believes something else. One moment the husband looked guilty, then the next the wife seemed crazy as well. I love a good story where the ending is uncertain or one you can't quite figure out. Goes to say there really is a fine line between love and hate. Secrets can tear a marriage apart, but they can also be the glue that holds it together. The story is told in alternating time lines with the year noted when the action takes place. The author keeps the reader on their toes by giving a little bit more information as the story progresses, bringing the reader closer to the truth. As you're reading, you quickly realise there is his story, there is her story and then there's the truth. The only thing I didn't particularly care about in this novel is Detective Loren's background when he is also being investigated. I thought it didn't really add to the story and truthfully, I just wanted to know more about Matt and Marie. "Life isn't a circle, he thought. Life is a diamond, with all the facets and points and corners reflecting the light back and forth so quickly that you can't ever begin to figure out where it all actually started, or where it's going to end."

Editorial Reviews

"Chaney grabs readers with her opening line: 'If you try to kill your wife without a plan, you will fail.'.Marriage laid bare, with a riveting account of evasion and pursuit-and a zinger of a coda." -Booklist, starred review"Chaney alternates past and present, creating an unbearably urgent narrative, and she has a shockingly firm grasp on the barbs and ennui of long-term marriage. A perfectly paced, shock-studded chiller from an author to watch." -Kirkus Reviews, starred review"Preorder, be first on your library hold list, mark your calendar. I absolutely adore JoAnn Chaney's wicked brain. Her writing is sharp, insightful, and darkly funny. And wow can she write a deliciously evil and giddy page-turner!" -BookRiot
