about

“A fiercely imagined world!” —Mary E. Pearson, New York Times bestselling author of the Remnant Chronicles

From the New York Times bestselling co-author of My Plain Jane comes the second book in a smoldering fantasy trilogy about a girl who must embrace her latent power or lose the dragons she loves. Perfect for fans of Julie Kagawa and Kendare Blake.

Mira the Dragonhearted is on the run with her friends following a fiery escape from the prison where she’d been condemned for speaking out against dragon trafficking.

And she wants answers. Has the treaty she’s been defending her whole life truly sold out the Fallen Isles to their enemies? Did her own parents lie to her? Will she lose control of her power and hurt the ones she loves?

The only way to find the truth is to go home again, to face the people who betrayed her and the parents she’s not sure she can trust. Home, where she must learn to rise above her fears. Or be consumed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Mira Keeps Getting Stronger I've been waiting to come back to this series for a long time, and it was quick to pull me back into its rich, deep, and magical world. I was reintroduced to delightful and unconventional characters, and their layered back stories. The story was evenly paced with action, drama, and character development. I liked the addition of small chapters being told from Aaru's perspective. It was even more tragic than I'd expected! While I truly loved some of the other stories the characters told, Mira was once again the star. I truly love her as a character, because she's strong, but so vulnerable at the same time. I was very, very proud of her choices and determination, even when she made mistakes. Her powers are extraordinary and I can't wait to see her grow into an even stronger young woman. The romance between Mira and Aaru is one of the most tender and sweet things I've ever read. I adore them and how they support each other and see their vulnerabilities as strengths. This is the kind of romance that needs to be protected at all costs! And then there's the ending... WOW. Given the events and power that Mira used at the end, I wasn't sure what the final book could offer in terms of scope and challenges. Let's just say the ending will test these close-knit group of heroes more than ever before. I'm genuinely concerned about who will be standing at the end, but I'm also genuinely thrilled about seeing it all come to a close!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Such an amazing story! I loved the first book in this series, Before She Ignites, and wondered if the second could possibly be as good. The second turned out to be better! I loved the character development that happened in this book. I thought that Jodi Meadows did such an amazing job with portraying Mira's anxiety. She didn't just suddenly overcome it. It was a daily thing she battled against. This was so much more realistic than many books treatment of anxiety. I enjoyed reading about Aaru's back story and learning about his life on Idris. It helped me to better understand him. I adored learning more about the belief system of the Fallen Gods and the potential of The Great Abandonment if the Dragons are not cared for. There is so much more interaction with the dragons in this one. Also I have decided I desperately want a Drakontos raptuses like Lala and Crystal to be my friend!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Compelling! The more I get to see and read of The Fallen Isles trilogy, the more I want to see. Mira and her companions escaped The Pit and are on a harrowing journey to save the dragons and find the truth behind The Mira Treaty. My favourite part of this book was getting to know more of Aaru's backstory and seeing through his point of view. We also spent more time with the group as a whole, which allowed the rest of the characters to shine through. See their wings stretch a little better after being held captive, if you will. Mira herself has evolved since the first book, but has a hard time seeing how much she has progressed. For me as a reader, however, it's not hard to see how this second book not only matches the good things about the first book (the characterization and Jodi Meadow's descriptive prose) but also expands on the world of the Fallen Isles and exceeded my expectations. We're no longer in the stifling Pit, but in the outside world where anything can happen. So in my eyes the story itself grows with Mira and her journey.
