about

A midnight call to duty brings Captain America aboard the S.H.I.E.L.D Heli-carrier to identify the corpse of his most feared adversary: the Red Skull! The shocking murder of Cap's oldest enemy may not be the end of the Skull's plans, however, because whoever shot the Skull has stolen his final project: an unfinished Cosmic Cube with the potential power to alter reality itself. Adding to the imminent danger, a cadre of the Skull's followers has already set in motion a plan to ignite bombs in the hearts of Paris, London and Manhattan - causing untold death and destruction. Racing against these bombs' rapidly ticking clocks, the Star-Spangled Avenger must not only solve the mystery of his nemesis' murder, but find the Cube before it can be used in the Red Skull's malevolent plot against the United States! Then, the questions plaguing Captain America's dreams and memories have been answered in the most brutal way possible. And in the wake of this brutality, General Lukin makes his first all-out assault - tearing open old wounds and threatening to make new scars that will never heal! Collects Captain America #1-9 & #11-14.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great place to start CA For the uninitiated, this is the book to start a thrilling CA run

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The hype is justified As iconic a Captain America story as you're ever gonna get outside his origin, this book is a thrilling, exciting, emotionally powerful read. I have a lot of trouble finding Cap stories that really hit me in just the right way, but Winter Soldier nails it. Sublime comic-bookery by Brubaker. Essential, sublime, the hype is justified.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Back from the dead. Ed Brubaker brings Bucky Barnes back from the dead and provides great insight into the creation of Bucky aka the winter soldier and how him and cap met and built a friendship. The way Brubaker manages to portray Bucky as a complete badass even at the age of 16 is excellent. In this volume we also get to see captain America go up against Bucky and it's a good fight!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Captain America story I have ever read I remember as a kid I bought the first graphic novel of this story sequence and read it once... 15 years later I finally read this book and I feel like a kid again. This is the quintessential Captain America story and this is blends all the best element of comic books into one story line. Friends turned into foes, evil politics and utmost heroism displayed by (in my opinion) marvels greatest hero, plus anyone who has no clue who the winter soldier is or the acts he committed will be in shock. Brubaker's work on Captain America over the years has been phenomenal and anyone who reads this book and watches the movie will see some similarities, but my bet is on that the book is better. I am an avid comic reader and they don't make Captain America stories like this no more. This story is arguably my favorite comic story ever and is the reason why I fell in love with comics again. Thank you brubaker, marvel and Captain America.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Brilliant! This book is a great starting point for people looking to get into Captain America. It strays from typical comic superhero stories in favour of a more realistic, espionage-style setting. The film largely based off of this book is excellent, and it is no surprise considering the source material.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from WOW This book really embodies what comic books stand for. I am a giant Captain America fan and this book does him justice, as well as the supporting cast like Falcon, Winter Soldier etc. The plot is deep, the action is nonstop and theirs surprises that pop up at every turn. The Winter Soldier collection is an absolute treat to read and I recommend it to anyone who is a longtime fan of Cap, Marvel or even someone wanting to get an insight into what the Marvel universe is like.
