While Merteuil challenges Valmont to seduce an innocent convent girl, he is also occupied with the conquest of a virtuous married woman. Rated 4 out of 5 by from A game of cat and mouse This was an excellent read! Instead of telling just a story about deception, betrayal and also the pursuits of innocent love, letters are written back and forth as the characters share their most cherished thoughts, scrupulous plans, and of course, deepest and darkest secrets. The Marquise de Merteuil and Vicomte de Valmont correspondence is by far the most entertaining and intriguing collection. You can feel the shift in their words as lustful pleasantries are no longer suited towards each other, and as in their rules, only one can triumph above the rest.
