A new translation of one of the most notorious novels of all time

Published just years before the French Revolution, Laclos's great novel of moral and emotional depravity is a disturbing and ultimately damning portrayal of a decadent society. Aristocrats and ex-lovers Marquise de Merteuil and Vicomte de Valmont embark on a sophisticated game of seduction and manipulation to bring amusement to their jaded lives. While Merteuil challenges Valmont to seduce an innocent convent girl, he is also occupied with the conquest of a virtuous married woman. Eventually their human pawns respond, and the consequences prove to be more serious--and deadly--than the players could have ever predicted.

From the Jacket

The complex moral ambiguities of seduction and revenge make Les Liaisons Dangereuses (1782) one of the most scandalous and controversial novels in European literature. This new translation gives Laclos a modern voice, and readers will be able to judge whether the novel is as 'diabolical' and 'infamous' as its critics have claimed, or w...

Pierre Choderlos De Laclos (1741-1803) was born in Amiens. His family was respectable but not distinguished, and at eighteen he entered the army and spent the next twenty years in various garrison towns, and reached the rank of capitaine-commandant without ever seeing battle. He cut a dash in provincial society, however, and in his spa...

Reviews

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A game of cat and mouse This was an excellent read! Instead of telling just a story about deception, betrayal and also the pursuits of innocent love, letters are written back and forth as the characters share their most cherished thoughts, scrupulous plans, and of course, deepest and darkest secrets. The Marquise de Merteuil and Vicomte de Valmont correspondence is by far the most entertaining and intriguing collection. You can feel the shift in their words as lustful pleasantries are no longer suited towards each other, and as in their rules, only one can triumph above the rest.
