about

High seas adventure, blackmail, and meddling gods meet in Dark Shores, a thrilling first novel in a fast-paced new YA fantasy series by USA Today bestselling author Danielle L. Jensen.

In a world divided by meddlesome gods and treacherous oceans, only the Maarin possess the knowledge to cross the Endless Seas. But they have one mandate: East must never meet West.

A PIRATE WITH A WILL OF IRON
Teriana is the second mate of the Quincense and heir to the Maarin Triumvirate. Her people are born of the seas and the keepers of its secrets, but when her closest friend is forced into an unwanted betrothal, Teriana breaks her people's mandate so her friend might escape-a choice with devastating consequences.

A SOLDIER WITH A SECRET
Marcus is the commander of the Thirty-Seventh, the notorious legion that has led the Celendor Empire to conquer the entire East. The legion is his family, but even they don't know the truth he's been hiding since childhood. It's a secret he'll do anything to protect, no matter how much it costs him - and the world.

A DANGEROUS QUEST
When an Empire senator discovers the existence of the Dark Shores, he captures Teriana's crew and threatens to reveal Marcus's secret unless they sail in pursuit of conquest, forcing the two into an unlikely-and unwilling-alliance. They unite for the sake of their families, but both must decide how far they are willing to go, and how much they are willing to sacrifice.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An Adventure You Don't Want to Miss!!! Danielle L. Jensen has always been a favourite author of mine so it came as no surprise to me that I'd love Dark Shores. I've been in a bit of a reading slump lately but this book was unputdownable! I want to start off by clarifying Dark Shores is NOT a pirate book. It is so much more! Dark Shores is a sea adventure and land exploration featuring a strong female captain and a morally-struggling solider. The writing was super engaging and kept me laser focused on all that was happening. Never a dull moment! Danielle has crafted a world unlike any I've read. She lays down the basics without overwhelming readers. Experiencing it was incredible. How I wish to see the Dark Shores with my own eyes! The setting is imaginative and rife with politics and religion. The former is complicated and frustrating but I begrudgingly understand its presence. The latter has a solid foundation that I'm eager to learn more about! There is so much I admire in Teriana. She's brave to make the decisions she's made no matter what it cost her and where it led her. Her tenacity alone had me rooting for her. Despite being on "opposing sides", I love the connection she forges with Marcus. I am, however, definitely holding my breath awaiting the fallout that's sure to come from what he did. The Legatus of the Thirty-Seventh Legion is no stranger to violence and deception. I'm in awe of all Marcus has had to do and endure in order to survive. The many tough spots he's been put in makes me want to tuck him away in a safe place where the harsh reality and unfair treatments cannot get to him. There's definitely much more coming for him. Though he's bound to be bloodied and bruised some more, I have complete faith he'd come out a victor. There are so many components at work in Dark Shores. Lydia, Teriana's best friend, is a big catalyst to the story and I just know she has an even bigger role to play. I can even see Marcus's sister getting in on the action. Then there's the villain that had me gritting my teeth every time he was on the pages. But I have to give him credit for his clever scheming. So very cunning. I hope he gets what he deserves (aka a very painful death). Once in a while I come across a book where all I want to put in my review is "I loved it, go read it!". Dark Shores is, without a doubt, one such book. So... I love this book so much, please go read it everyone!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Romantic and Exciting I've been looking forward to this book ever since it was first announced. I love books with exploration and high seas adventure and gods, and this book delivered all of these and then some! The world is interesting and complex, with different cultures clashing and causing problems for our heroes, Marcus and Teriana. They are both great characters and have excellent (if sometimes volatile) chemistry. Both are stubborn in their beliefs, yet the more time they spend with one another, the more they question what they believe and why they believe it. This also leads to a slow burn romance, which Jensen does very, very well. I know I'll be constantly rooting for them in future books. I also look forward to learning more of Marcus' men, and all of the side characters and villains. I am going to say right now that Servius is bae and needs to stay safe and alive. While the characters are the major draw, the action is also frequent and exciting. I really loved the high seas adventures, with one godly battle literally causing my eyes to widen. I desperately want to know more about these deities and their powers. Most of the book focuses on the humans and the complex relationships with these characters, but I just love the way these gods are being set up. DARK SHORES is a romantic, exciting, fun read that is perfect for the summer and for readers who want to begin a new adventure with a feisty privateer and a stubborn soldier.

Editorial Reviews

"Richly-woven, evocative, and absolutely impossible to put down-I was hooked from the first lines! Dark Shores has everything I look for in a fantasy novel: fresh, unique settings, a cast of complex and diverse characters, and an unflinching boldness with the nuanced world-building. I loved every word."-Sarah J. Maas, #1 New York Times bestselling author"The book grabs readers from the beginning with its stellar worldbuilding and multidimensional characters, and the mythical elements are truly believable within the constructs of the story. The perspective shifts between the viewpoints of Teriana and Marcus from chapter to chapter, offering readers greater insights into each. ...A gripping introduction to a new series."-Kirkus Reviews (starred)"This is a lush, imaginative world, and as the focus shifts between Teriana and Marcus, it becomes clear that the readers are only getting a glimpse of its complicated history and mythology. ...Their secrets don't, of course, stop Teriana and Marcus from embarking on a steamy romance, and fans of Rutkoski's sighworthy The Winner's Kiss and the high-stakes sea adventure of Levenseller's Daughter of the Pirate King will want to know where Marcus and Teriana journey to next." -Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books
