Deep work is the ability to focus without distraction on a cognitively demanding task. It's a skill that allows you to quickly master complicated information and produce better results in less time. Deep work will make you better at what you do and provide the sense of true fulfillment that comes from craftsmanship. In short, deep work is like a super power in our increasingly competitive twenty-first century economy. And yet, most people have lost the ability to go deep-spending their days instead in a frantic blur of e-mail and social media, not even realizing there's a better way.
In DEEP WORK, author and professor Cal Newport flips the narrative on impact in a connected age. Instead of arguing distraction is bad, he instead celebrates the power of its opposite. Dividing this book into two parts, he first makes the case that in almost any profession, cultivating a deep work ethic will produce massive benefits. He then presents a rigorous training regimen, presented as a series of four "rules," for transforming your mind and habits to support this skill.
A mix of cultural criticism and actionable advice, DEEP WORK takes the reader on a journey through memorable stories-from Carl Jung building a stone tower in the woods to focus his mind, to a social media pioneer buying a round-trip business class ticket to Tokyo to write a book free from distraction in the air-and no-nonsense advice, such as the claim that most serious professionals should quit social media and that you should practice being bored. DEEP WORK is an indispensable guide to anyone seeking focused success in a distracted world.
Cal Newport, Ph.D., lives in Washington, D.C., where he is a writer and an assistant professor of computer science at Georgetown University. He also runs the popular website Study Hacks: Decoding Patterns of Success. This is his fifth book.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome for Students I read this book hoping to help my work ethic. The book provides details and explanations where needed, but includes many actionable ways to practice the things he's advocating for. It is somewhat common sense advice, but it does not feel tedious or boring for it. I am reading it for a second time since then and am trying to implement even more lessons this time around.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A highly recommended read I just finished reading this book and highly recommend it to everyone. Without reading this book, many people sadly know of only one component, which is Newport's criticism of social media and addiction to it. However, as the book is titled, it's really about engaging in "deep work", and the conditions needed to get into it. I highly recommend this book to anyone, like myself, who has been lagging behind in work and is trying to push forward, catch up, and do far better in life. This book will help you bring discipline back into your life.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from For the professional who has everything After reading this, it's very easy to see why Cal Newport is such an accomplished professor and why this book has received as many accolades as it has. In "Deep Work", Newport guides his reader to the importance of doing "deep work" and how doing so can help one accomplish so much more. He sets the stage for what deep work is in the first half of the book and in the second half, he provides the reader with four key rules to achieve deep work. For any professional who is looking to advance their career or even a new graduate just starting out in the working world, this book is a must read. The four rules are so simple and while they are also obvious, Newport explains them in a way that makes the reader think that they are earth shattering and Newport has discovered some long lost secret. He fills the book with anecdotes of success of others who have been able to use the four rules, achieve deep work and what benefits those individuals reaped from doing so. #plumreview
