Kobo ebook | September 24, 2013

Stephen King returns to the character and territory of one of his most popular novels ever, The Shining, in this instantly riveting novel about the now middle-aged Dan Torrance and the very special twelve-year-old girl he must save from a tribe of murderous paranormals.

On highways across America, a tribe of people called the True Knot travel in search of sustenance. They look harmless—mostly old, lots of polyester, and married to their RVs. But as Dan Torrance knows, and spunky twelve-year-old Abra Stone learns, the True Knot are quasi-immortal, living off the steam that children with the shining produce when they are slowly tortured to death.

Haunted by the inhabitants of the Overlook Hotel, where he spent one horrific childhood year, Dan has been drifting for decades, desperate to shed his father’s legacy of despair, alcoholism, and violence. Finally, he settles in a New Hampshire town, an AA community that sustains him, and a job at a nursing home where his remnant shining power provides the crucial final comfort to the dying. Aided by a prescient cat, he becomes “Doctor Sleep.”

Then Dan meets the evanescent Abra Stone, and it is her spectacular gift, the brightest shining ever seen, that reignites Dan’s own demons and summons him to a battle for Abra’s soul and survival. This is an epic war between good and evil, a gory, glorious story that will thrill the millions of devoted readers of The Shining and satisfy anyone new to this icon in the King canon.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not the best follow-up, but still interesting to read One of the things in later King novels that become very apparent is the villains in his novels are not nearly as dangerous as they are built up to be throughout the story. The menacing band of villains in this novel seem to feast on kids who possess the power of the shining, but by the end of the novel you realize that their bark was MUCH fiercer than their bite--which is pretty much absent. Also the novel trails for about 200 pages in the middle.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good sequel As always, Stephen King created a beautifully written book. This was a good sequel to the shining with a great twist, and a good ending that tied things up nicely for the Torrance family. The only issue I had was it had a creepy adventure vibe that felt more like an episode of Supernatural than the Shining, but it was still a good read.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from great read I found that Doctor Sleep provides a perfect extension to Danny's character from The Shining. It certainly answers the question of what happens to the Torrance family after the winter they spent at the Overlook. Although the book has an all too predictable conclusion, the last chapter (including the author's note) really wraps up all possible loose ends. Overall, I was happy with the way that this book ended, and in my opinion it has improved the whole story that began with The Shining.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from If you missed Danny Torrance, here's your chance to get some news.. I really enjoyed this book even if some bits are not as complete as I would have liked. I feel like there's was some missed potential storylines but overall a great read. Hope there'll be a third book featuring Danny and Abra.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Just in case you were wondering what happened to Danny after "The Shining" This is a clever book - writing a sequel to "the Shining" and see how Danny is now living his life - you'll never look at the Snow Birds in their camper vans the same way again!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from awesome this is a follow up to the Shining, following little Danny as he is all grown up. I was always left wondering what happened to him after the Overlook Hotel...and now I know. Great read!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great follow up The Shining was one of the first Stephen King books I ever read, so I was thrilled when this book was released. Some characters get in your mind and stay there. I thoroughly enjoyed this book even though it was not what I expected in the least! I especially loved the A.A. references as I was raised going to meetings with my dad for as long as I can remember and truly enjoyed the raw look at the program. Not a subject often mentioned in fiction. As far as I am concerned, this book was a hit.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Anti-climactic I was very excited to see where Danny ended up and I adored the beginning chapters. However, I was not a fan of the ending. It seemed like nothing between the characters was resolved.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Can't touch The Shining One of the few Stephen King books I've been disappointed in. Felt the ending was a very big let-down...anti-climatic. Such potential to see where Danny Torrence ended up, but this was not a great read. Won't be going on my 're-read' shelf.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love! If you haven't read "The shining" as of yet, I recommend you do so before starting this one. Another adventure told, in the most prolific of ways - as usual. Stephen king is a literary genius.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Really loved the beginning and as always King's writing was almost enchantingly eerie. I'd have to say it was not one of my favorite's from his work, but it is definitely worth reading at least once if you are an avid King fan!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An amazing story This fantastic tale of Dan Torrence as an adult was, to me, perfect in its sense of maturity both in the character and the author. Mr. King really came through and left me wanting more. If there's ever a continuation I'll be the first to pick it up.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I really enjoyed this book! Even the nights that I would usually fall asleep reading, I stayed awake and kept reading. I'm not a fast reader, but with this book, I couldn't wait to get back to my book and read it pretty fast for me. Even if you haven't heard, seen or read the shinning(because you've been under a rock somewhere. Lol), you will still like and understand the book. Knowing the shinning just helps with a few references.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from AA Insight Mr King never disappoints. As an AA member. I felt a remarkable kinship with Dan Torrence. Several times I felt a meeting in print was provided better than "The Grapevine". Great 12th step work!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The King I Love!!! All I can say is, "WOW"! There's not a dull moment with Doctor Sleep! I felt like a child waiting on recess to go out and play, the whole time I read! I've got to put the book down so many times because I have duties to attend, and I just (half assed) them so I could find out what happened next! I'm going back now to read The Shining! I saw the movie, but I just know that the book will be more informative and betttter! Thank you for lending me your mind Mr. King! You Rock (as always)!
