about

In this New York Times bestselling sequel to Kerri Maniscalco's haunting #1 debut Stalking Jack the Ripper, bizarre murders are discovered in the castle of Prince Vlad the Impaler, otherwise known as Dracula. Could it be a copycat killer...or has the depraved prince been brought back to life?

Following the grief and horror of her discovery of Jack the Ripper's true identity, Audrey Rose Wadsworth has no choice but to flee London and its memories. Together with the arrogant yet charming Thomas Cresswell, she journeys to the dark heart of Romania, home to one of Europe's best schools of forensic medicine...and to another notorious killer, Vlad the Impaler, whose thirst for blood became legend.

But her life's dream is soon tainted by blood-soaked discoveries in the halls of the school's forbidding castle, and Audrey Rose is compelled to investigate the strangely familiar murders. What she finds brings all her terrifying fears to life once again.
Kerri Maniscalco grew up in a semi-haunted house outside New York City, where her fascination with gothic settings began. In her spare time she reads everything she can get her hands on, cooks all kinds of food with her family and friends, and drinks entirely too much tea while discussing life's finer points with her cats. Her first no...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better than the first Darker than the first, but the character development has improved greatly, and the book is considerably accurate.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Two words: Thomas Cresswell Two words: Thomas Cresswell *heart eye emoji* Okay, here are more words. Loved this second installment to the Stalking Jack the Ripper series. I recently moved and have been hella busy so I didn't get to read this as quickly as I would have liked, but at least I got to savour it for longer! The backdrop and storyline were great and I really appreciated how Maniscalco wove history and science into such a compelling fiction story. Much like the first one, I was able to guess at least part of the ending, but it didn't make me enjoy it any less. It was great to see Audrey Rose's development as a character after the events of the first book, and watch the relationship between her and Thomas develop. And speaking of Mr Cresswell, my god do I love him. I'll just take an entire book of him smerking and engaging in witty banter please and thank you. I also thoroughly enjoyed the introduction of newer side charters, including Cresswell's sister and her partner. Can't wait to see what adventure we will be taken on in the next instalment! Is it 2018 yet?

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Somehow darker than STJR and I Love It Wow. Somehow this one got a whole hell of a lot darker than Stalking Jack the Ripper. If you thought SJTR was scary, Hunting Prince Dracula has turned the dial up a few notches. Hunting Prince Dracula is a near direct continuation following the events of Stalking Jack the Ripper as Audrey Rose and Thomas head to Romania to study at a school for forensics. The school is held in a castle that once belonged to the infamous voivode, Vlad Dracul, otherwise known as Dracula. Audrey is still coming to terms with the truth of Jack the Ripper and it is evident as throughout the novel she's coming to terms with the trauma and the grief. However, she's been offered this amazing opportunity to study at the best forenscic academy in Europe and she does not want to let this opportunity slip away. However, as they attend the forensic academy, people are dying with their blood drained. Is Dracula still alive and drinking people's blood? This book is so much darker in tone than Stalking Jack the Ripper. Perhaps it's the setting that helps with the darker atmosphere of the novel, but I really enjoyed it! Throughout the novel, we see Audrey dealing with the trauma of what happened in the previous novel and so that is perhaps another factor that contributes to the darker tone of Hunting Prince Dracula. Even though Audrey is suffering from her trauma, she maintains her "take no shit" attitude. She is the only woman in an environment filled with men who will look down on her for simply being a woman. She does not care for it and will take it from no man, not even Thomas. He makes some blunders and after a discussion with Audrey, he understands her situation and promises to be more considerate. Thomas is even more smooth and flirty in this book than I remember him being in the first one. They have that established relationship and chemistry The lore in this novel is definitely researched well and I enjoyed the world that Maniscalco has created for Audrey and Thomas to inhabit. It's historical but definitely takes on these feminist stances that I love. I was constantly in the dark about why these vampiric murders were happening and I didn't realize it until the reveal finally happened. I enjoyed the reveal and finding out what happened and it was d a r k. It gave me Bones' Gormogon arc vibes. I really look forward to reading the next book and Hunting Prince Dracula didn't fall into the trap of the second book. I highly enjoyed this book and I can't wait to read more of Audrey and Thomas's story.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from A Trifle Disappointing, But An Engaging Story I admit to being a tad disappointed by this one. Having waited so long to have a copy available via the library, my expectations were set high - perhaps too high, in hindsight, considering that while I did enjoy the first book in this series, Stalking Jack The Ripper, I did have some issues with it that Hunting Prince Dracula didn't really improve upon. Namely, Audrey Rose herself. She has her moments, but for the most part I find her to be a tad aggravating. She boasts of her own abilities and throws a tantrum if anyone ventures the smallest of opinions against these self-proclaimed abilities, but when push comes to shove, she can be rather... hysterical, dare I say it. She tends to jump to conclusions and absolutely refuses to allow any explanation, and after belatedly realizing she was in the wrong, offers a rather lackluster apology. I found her to be lacking in character development and a very dramatic narrator, often making a mountain out of molehill. The identity of the true villain of this piece did catch me off guard, but it wasn't this huge, shocking reveal that I had been anticipating. It was more of a very confusing moment that took far too long to explain and piece together for my liking. The resolution felt rushed and over-the-top. Overall, this book felt very lengthy, like it rambled on for far too long. Where I was expecting to fly through it, I ended up having to sit down and force myself to finish it so that it wouldn't be sitting on my desk any longer. As a result I am very disappointed, disgruntled, and unsure as to whether I will bother continuing with this series. I may give Escaping From Houdini a chance, but my expectations will be considerably lower should I venture into it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Enjoyable A sequel that will satisfy those who were fans of the first book. It has more character development from out main character, which is always nice. And it's set in Romania, which I found to be quite exotic.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful! Hunting Prince Dracula was absolutely stunning. I loved this book so much, it was just as good as the first one, if not better. I’m already dying to read the next book. After the death of her brother and the haunting past of the Jack the Ripper case, Audrey Rose cant shake the feeling that she’s being watched. It doesn’t help that now shes living in Dracula’s castle where she has to battle for a spot to attend one of the best medical schools. When a new murderer starts killing students and villagers, and draining them of blood, everyone believes that Dracula has come back to life and is taking his revenge. Could Prince Dracula be immortal, or is someone murdering people in his name. I forgot how much I adore Audrey Rose. I love her strong personality, she’s not afraid to be a feminist in a time where it was quite scandalous for a woman to act this way, but that doesn’t stop her. She tells people exactly how it is, she won’t let a man undermine her and she is not afraid to outsmart anyone in her class. Honestly I wish that Audrey Rose was a real person, because I would love to be best friends with her. Her romance with Thomas is as wonderful as ever. This book definitely didn’t have second book syndrome, and their romance was basically the same as from the first book, but slowly moving forward. The thing I love most about this series is the fact that it always manages to surprise me. I have so many guesses to who the killer really is, but the author always manages to lead me away form the true killer and think “No way it could be this person,” I love it. I’m always pleasantly surprised at how the mystery turns out. Overall, I love this series so much. I highly recommend it to everyone, whether you love contemporary, fantasy, or mystery this will be a series you love. I cannot wait for the next book to come out.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Murder Mystery! My favourite part about the Audrey Rose and Thomas Cresswell adventures is their chemistry! They are so adorable and I love how much their friendship has blossomed. Such a great murder mystery for teens!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Oh Thomas is such a cutie in this book! I also guessed wrong on this book too as to who was the killer! I was surprised by Thomas’s lineage and the concluding letter from the University. I’m a little less excited about the third book being set in the US but I love that Audrey is getting back to her family roots and getting the adventure she craves + an adorable beau! I wasn’t too crazy about how Audrey’s personality and decisions seemed to take several steps back from the ending of the last book but I did like seeing her gain confidence in her relationship with Thomas while also demanding respect from a much larger audience who would also be her professional coworkers. I loved the setting which is part of why I was disappointed in the announcement of the third book going to the US. I want something unique or a little exotic…the US has been done to death. Go to Denmark or Norway or Iceland or something!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Haunting and Hypnotic Nothing can compare with the excitement of reading the continuation of a series you adore. Kerri Maniscalco delivered a dark and addictive story with Stalking Jack the Ripper and now the sequel Hunting Prince Dracula is just as hypnotic as her debut. Seductive. Chilling. Unputdownable. All words I'd use to describe this stellar sequel to the SJTR story. Hunting Prince Dracula is again bloody (or really actually bloodless), full of gore and fascinating beyond simple words. The riveting mystery and sweet confessions had my heart pumping overtime. The story takes place not long after the end of the first book. Audrey Rose is still processing the truth from the Ripper case. She puts on a steady front but fear and regret assault her constantly. "'What if' were the two most tragic words in existence when paired together. 'If only' were no better when coupled off." (p. 109). It poked at my heart to see Audrey Rose so afraid but at the same time I knew she was stronger and better than her terrors. I was not disappointed. Thomas was still the charming sharp-tongued gentleman as ever. It was impossible not be smitten with his honest to a fault yet casual speeches. "He turned to me, expression serious as I'd ever witnessed it. "You would miss me terribly and know it. Just as I would miss you in ways I cannot fathom."" (p. 41). *cue blushing* As blunt as he always seemed Thomas was not without any secrets. I didn't see the twist coming but it heightened the stakes at hand in an absolute way. As Audrey Rose and Thomas dug deeper into the mysterious deaths at school we got to explore the castle of Prince Vlad. The hidden passages and unknown tunnels carried so many secrets and dangers. What a terrifying but thrilling experience it was. I loved how unstoppable and full of smarts these two were. "If one simply looks to others for their opinions, they lose the ability to think critically for themselves. Progress would never be made if everyone all appeared and thought and loved in the same manner." (p. 118). Here begins the gushing over the romance. Audrey Rose Wadsworth and Thomas Cresswell give me life! I loved every second they spent in each other's company. It helped that they lived literally meters away from each other ;) The banters and the swoons were extra delicious. Lots of unspoken words between the two but their feelings were obvious so it was fun to watch the tension simmer~ I've read some really great books lately but Hunting Prince Dracula definitely came out on top. There's no doubt it'll be on my list of favourite books read this year! Just like last year, I'm again dying for more Wadsworth and Cresswell. Dear Ms. Maniscalco, please never stop writing!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Creepy and Fun This sequel was fantastic! I felt the mystery was much better (which is saying something given how great the previous story was), the romance was stronger, the characters were more developed, and the creep factor was amped to a startling degree. The pacing was great, and I honestly can't get enough of Audrey Rose and Thomas's relationship. It's just so much fun! I'm a fan of Eastern European folklore, so it was awesome to see it brought into the story and experimented with in new, fun ways. The drama was high through most of the story, and there was a lot more action. I honestly couldn't figure out who the villain was until the reveal at the end, and it wasn't someone I thought it would be. And I was not joking about the creepy factor. There is a hauntingly beautiful setting near the end, and a scene with my least favourite insects that honestly left me cringing and checking my own hair (you'll understand when you read it). I love these books and need more of them! Definitely a series to read for fun, creepy, mysterious horror!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Just as great as the first! **I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.** Thoughts right after finishing Just as good (possibly better?) than the first book! LIKES - Audrey Rose and Thomas are pretty much the most adorable couple ever. I love it when they work together. - Thomas really started coming out of his shell in this one. He was joking around a lot more and even disclosed some information about himself! - I liked the creepy atmosphere of Hunting Prince Dracula. It had a very creepy Gothic vibe which I loved. - The mystery was a lot of fun to try and solve. Like the first book, I did guess who it was pretty early on (though I was thrown off for a bit near the end, you'll see!) and I do wish it was a little less predictable at times. I did enjoy how they discovered the killer and all the ties to Dracula were really cool. - I also really loved that the setting was a medical school in this giant castle. Definitely added to the creepy vibes. - Lots of awesome girl power in this book! DISLIKES - There wasn't too much I didn't like about Hunting Prince Dracula. I think the plot could have gone a little faster, it did drag at certain points and I wish I hadn't been able to guess the killer so quickly. - I'm still a little confused as to why the killer did what he/she did. The motive just didn't feel strong enough to me and there's a few questions I have regarding it all.

"Maniscalco's portrayal of scientific invention in a newly industrial era will serve as a fine first foray into Victorian classics."
