about

“It certainly filled the Battlestar Galactica–shaped hole in my heart.” Victoria Aveyard, bestselling author of The Red Queen

Read the New York Times bestselling blockbuster that critics are calling “out-of-this-world awesome.” The first in an epic sci-fi series unlike anything else out there.

Kady thought breaking up with Ezra was the worst thing she’d ever been through. That was before her planet was invaded. Now, with enemy fire raining down on them, Kady and Ezra are forced to fight their way onto one of the evacuating craft, with an enemy warship in hot pursuit.

But the warship could be the least of their problems. A deadly plague has broken out and is mutating, with terrifying results; the fleet’s AI, which should be protecting them, may actually be their biggest threat; and nobody in charge will say what’s really going on. As Kady plunges into a web of data hacking to get to the truth, it’s clear only one person can help her bring it all to light: Ezra.

Told through a fascinating dossier of hacked documents—including emails, schematics, military files, IMs, medical reports, interviews, and more—Illuminae is the first book in a heart-stopping, high-octane trilogy about lives interrupted, the price of truth, and the courage of everyday heroes.

Brace yourself, because you’re about to be immersed in a mindscape that you’ll never want to leave.” —Marie Lu, author of the bestselling Legend series

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved! "Figure out how to argue the merits of practical espionage in computer crime to a college application board without getting arrested." -Kady Grant, pg. 89 I thought this book was a delightful high stake action sci fi story with a side of romance and hilarity. I loved the format, I must admit that I am not a huge fan of narration and as this book as very little. I love that. At first I felt detached from them but by the end I felt connected with almost all the characters, major and supporting (and non organic). These authors are brilliant storytellers. I thought that the politics, the morality of debating costs and morality of actions to be amazing. I think the second half of the book was much stronger than the first. "I am Frequently underestimated. I think it because I am short."-Kady (I relate to this sentiment so much. I laughed for awhile) Spoilers: "How many people have loved only to have lost." the deaths on the Copernicus did not affect me that much. Until those darn names and pictures brought me to tears to look through. I thought that the PTSD was a good thing to discuss in this book. I did not expect all the deaths, but I loved that it added to the stakes of it. It made it realistic. I loved that I never knew who would die. I also really liked the romance. I found Kady annoying at first but she grew on me and Ezra was the MVP of the first half and Kady of the second. I also thought the foreshadowing was excellently done.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from UHHH---MAZING! This book. THIS BOOK. Guys, this booooooooook. Amazing. Amazing. Amazing. Space + War + Biovirus Zombies + Creepy AI + Romance = mind blown. The year is 2575, Kady Grant's little planet is attacked by a rival corporation. Kady and her {now} ex-boyfriend, Ezra, are one of the few who escape to the evacuating fleet. That fact alone is exciting on it's own and THAT IS ONLY THE BEGINNING FOLKS. A deadly plague is exposed to one of the ships and everyone is completely blindsided by the virus. Kady, the super hacker wonder-kid, digs deep down in the tangled web to determine the truth. The format of this book was so different from anything I've read before. It's incredibly alluring and it paints the story so beautifully. At first glance, I admit the format is off-putting. Even when I finally purchased the book, I kept pushing it aside. I read the first page 30 times before I decided to finally dive right in. Then I devoured it in 2 days! Who needs to shower or eat? right? Who am I kidding, I was eating the whole time. This book red like a movie! You could feel the heartbeats, feel the pain, and see the action unravel itself. I do have one warning: do NOT get attached to anyone - like the walking dead, seriously. Or you are in-store for some heavy heartbreak, like I was. I also loved the amount of swearing in this book, it was so needed - because what these kids went through... Jeezzzz-us. I've read also that the audiobook is incredible as well, so that might be on my to-do list as well! I especially enjoyed Lady + Ezra, but once AIDAN came on the scene. Creepy yet... I can't even describe. Kady's interaction with AIDAN was a huge highlight in the book for me, it was amazingly good. If you're a sci-fi nerd like I am, this is a no-brainer! And I can't wait to read Gemina and Obsidio next.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from WOW oh hi how do I review this? ummm 4.5/5 stars what did I learn...falling in love is hazardous to your health and can be used against you by evil computers in order to save people computers are creepy and have brains that are capable of emotions and murder, do no trust your MacBook (but also Aidan like had the right mindset with Copernicus, kind of. like I'm not for killing people, but like they were all sick and going Walking Dead on each other, so...but he made a huge mistake letting Bay 4 loose, like wth Aidan, I still hate you) the writing was beautifully creepy, especially at the end. huge props to the authors, how do you even co-write something like this, like do you guys have half of each other's brains or something, did the girl dragging the heart behind her help with the procedure or what highly recommend. this is The Walking Dead but in space. i have the other two books on hold at the library. if the crazy people who kill and skin other people and use the bodies to form the words "Help Us" come back I will probably die

Rated 5 out of 5 by from PERFECTION Just as goddamn perfect the second time around. Somehow I had forgotten a lot of the big events and twists, despite how iconic they are. This story is a roller coaster and my emotions were all over the place. Jay Kristoff and Amie Kaufman are masters and we're not worthy of their brilliance. Kady and Ezra are, hands down, some of my favourite characters, and AIDAN is insane, I love it. With that said, I'm gonna blast through Gemina again and then weep forever as I read the finale Obsidio.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of my favourite books off all time! The format is super unique but doesn't prohibit any connection with the characters. Well-written, dynamic characters, interesting plot with twists, and overall really really good. The authors were creative with this and it shows.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An Unforgettable Masterpiece I get why so many people are going crazy over this series, and if you haven't read it, change that now. Not only is the visual design and structure of this book as breathtaking as anything I've ever seen and helps immerse you into an unforgettable reading experience, the story and characters are beyond wonderful. I honestly could not stop reading. I love this style of books, and the changes in its looks kept me interested and engaged, and honestly turning the book itself to read some pages. The story is INTENSE, heart-pounding, and unforgettable. I was deeply in love with all the characters. Ezra will always have my heart, and Kady is one of the most powerful sci-fi heroines ever put to page. I was cheering for them, hurting with them, desperate for them to stay alive. Even the side characters like James and AIDAN will leave marks on your soul. The action is visceral and real, and the finale will leave you gasping for air. I was totally consumed by this book and cannot recommend it enough to everyone who enjoys reading. It's beyond amazing and is easily going to be one of my favourite books of all time. Do not let this series pass you by. It is truly one of a kind and an adventure you will never want to stop.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing book! Wow, this book was amazing! This story is told in an unconventional format. It consists of a series of files: transcripts, emails, and memos. All of these files come together to tell the story of how a planet was attacked and the people were evacuated to spaceships, sparking a space war. The beginning of the story was a little confusing because of the unique format, and the many characters. But after about the first quarter of the story, I was hooked! The graphics in this book were incredible! They were very detailed. A lot of work went into the design and layout of this book, as well as the writing. Part of what makes this story so addicting is the blending of genres. It’s definitely a fantasy and science fiction story since it takes place in space. But there’s a lot of romance and thrilling suspense. This is now one of my favourite books! I can’t wait to read Gemina!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Got Me Interested in Sci-Fi Again! I bought this book when it first came out because of the cover and the way it was written in 'documents' and not in narration. I absolutely loved this book, the character have fantastic personalities and the pacing is great. This book even caught the interest of my brother (who isn't a reader).

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I loved this! This was a little hard to get into, but so worth it. At about the half-way point this story really takes off. The plot is so fast paced, and the formatting (the book is told in files and e-mails mostly) actually becomes very gripping. Will definitely pick up the sequel!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing Read! This was an amazing read. This was one of the best books that I have read in 2017. It definitely made my all-time favourites list, For this book, I listened to the audiobook, while reading the book. I absolutely loved it because it felt like the characters were really coming to life this way. The story had me on the edge of my seat the entire time. The format and the writing of the book was amazing. There was action, romance, and a bit of a horror aspect as well. I loved the characters and the world was fantastic. I believe that this is one of the best YA Science fiction books out there, and I cannot wait to read Gemina. Overall, an incredible read.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Stunning !! **Stunning**. Set in the year 2575 and written exclusively with text messages and memos, this sci-fi space adventure is an incredible achievement. An unusual distinct style of writing, this extraordinary spellbinding tale begins to unfold swiftly and the reader is soon captivated. The colony of Kerenza is unexpectedly attacked and the people are scrambling to get to the shuttles to escape the missiles pounding down at a horrifying speed. Unfortunately the Artificial Intelligence Defense Analytics Network (Aidan) has been heavily damaged and unable to assist with defense or aiding the injured to escape. As hackers try to get some response from Aidan they soon discover it is running amok and has become a dangerous force with it’s intentions unknown; helping or out to destroy. Illuminae is a thrilling, mind-blowing story and one of the best sci-fi’s written. Highly recommended!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved it! I’ve been watching Star Trek: TOS so once I finished Gentleman’s Guide I knew I wanted something with starships and space battles and silly pseudo-science words that make no sense. Illuminae was the only sci-fi book that I had on my TBR shelves that seemed even close to what I wanted, and it absolutely delivered. My copy is a two year old ARC that doesn’t have the right cover or all the art it’s supposed to but I could not stop reading. It was compelling, refreshing, and surprisingly heartbreaking. The book is told through a series of fake reports, conversation transcripts, IM logs, and other data. I didn’t think I would like the format because it adds another barrier between the reader and characters, and I wasn’t exactly wrong there – I still don’t have a proper grasp on either Ezra or Kady – but this somehow did not take away from my enjoyment. And as the book went on, I loved both characters (and their friends) regardless. Also I am 99% sure I am not imagining the Star Trek references. Right? Someone reassure me. The only thing that really bothered me was that I don’t exactly understand why BeiTech attacks the colony. Maybe I am not supposed to understand, but the motivation for the antagonists was murky and confusing. I am also not sure whether to attribute this confusion to the fact that we only see the protagonists’ side because of the book’s format, or to the world-building itself. Either way, I felt like I was missing something the whole time, which is the only reason for the lost half star. After finishing it, I was dismayed to discover that the series is not over yet, the second book is only out in hardcover, and the third only releases next March. Truly horrifying, I know. Naturally, I bought Gemina immediately and now I need to get my hands on a hardcover copy of Illuminae. In all, though, the book was great. I was reading in bed, on the subway, in free moments in class, and while walking (at night–I was that invested). If that doesn’t say read this book, I don’t know what does. || read this review on my blog ||

Rated 5 out of 5 by from AMAZING I read this book in one sitting, forgetting to eat at one point, and eating while reading at another. This is everything I look for in a book; creativity, a problem that makes you think about the moral and immoral sides as the right answer, loveable characters, interesting format, and something to haunt you long after you've finished. This is the perfect book, and I would recommend it to anyone and everyone. You may feel a bit discouraged at first, but you will adore it as you progress. I would rate higher than 5 stars if possible.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Definitely one of the most unique book I have ever read I am so glad I end up finishing this book. It is absolutely amazing. The settings, the content, and most important of all, the style. Wow, I really don't know what to say. The style of this book is just so unique and interesting. There are pages with audio recordings, pages with computer drawing, pages with email messages and more. I am so thankful to my friend who read this book first and kept on recommending me to finish this book, and I am so glad that I listen to her and did. Or I would have miss out on this super amazing book. Be warned, the book doesn't really get interesting until after about a 100 and something pages, but after that, it becomes amazing and you won't be able to stop reading it. That is what happen to me. After I read a few pages, I actually got really tired of it because nothing is happening and I am so board. However, after I got after the boring section and into the action part, it just suddenly become so good. So if you think that this book is boring and can't stand it anymore. Give it another chance. Read till 200 pages. You will not regret it!
