Inside Out and Back Again is a #1 New York Times bestseller, a Newbery Honor Book, and a winner of the National Book Award!

Inspired by the author's childhood experience as a refugee—fleeing Vietnam after the Fall of Saigon and immigrating to Alabama—this coming-of-age debut novel told in verse has been celebrated for its touching child's-eye view of family and immigration.

Hà has only ever known Saigon: the thrills of its markets, the joy of its traditions, and the warmth of her friends close by. But now the Vietnam War has reached her home. Hà and her family are forced to flee as Saigon falls, and they board a ship headed toward hope—toward America.

This moving story of one girl's year of change, dreams, grief, and healing received four starred reviews, including one from Kirkus which proclaimed it "enlightening, poignant, and unexpectedly funny."

An author's note explains how and why Thanhha Lai translated her personal experiences into Hà's story. This paperback edition also includes an interview with the author, an activity you can do with your family, tips on writing poetry, and discussion questions.

Thanhhà Lai was born in Viêt Nam and now lives with her family in New York.Like the father inListen, Slowly, Thanhhà has been buying bicycles for poor children in Viêt Nam since 2005.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Powerful, Heartwarming A brilliant novel that appears poetic but is read as a personal journal, Inside Out and Back Again does an amazing job at portraying the perspective of a young girl, facing the drastic changes in her life as she escapes the Vietnam War as a refugee. You really come to love and relate to Hà, and also to the author since it's inspired by her own experiences. A must-read, I highly recommend this to everyone!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Just a lovely story This honor book is better than the medal winner. (The same thing happened last year - I thought Turtle in Paradise was better than Moon Over Manifest). This is the story of a little Vietnamese girl who flees the war to America in the 70s and her adjustment to living in Alabama. It is told through poetry, although the poems read more like journal entries. Just a really sweet story - definitely worth a quick read.
