A new page-turning mystery about science, faith, love and belonging, set in a friendly desert community where ghosts, angels, aliens, and government conspiracies are commonplace parts of everyday life. Welcome to Night Vale…

“Brilliant, hilarious, and wondrously strange. I’m packing up and moving to Night Vale! –Ransom Riggs, #1 New York Times Bestselling Author of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children.

From the authors of the New York Times bestselling novel Welcome to Night Vale and the creators of the #1 international podcast of the same name, comes a mystery exploring the intersections of faith and science, the growing relationship between two young people who want desperately to trust each other, and the terrifying, toothy power of the Smiling God.

Nilanjana Sikdar is an outsider to the town of Night Vale. Working for Carlos, the town’s top scientist, she relies on fact and logic as her guiding principles. But all of that is put into question when Carlos gives her a special assignment investigating a mysterious rumbling in the desert wasteland outside of town. This investigation leads her to the Joyous Congregation of the Smiling God, and to Darryl, one of its most committed members. Caught between her beliefs in the ultimate power of science and her growing attraction to Darryl, she begins to suspect the Congregation is planning a ritual that could threaten the lives of everyone in town. Nilanjana and Darryl must search for common ground between their very different world views as they are faced with the Congregation’s darkest and most terrible secret.

Joseph Fink created the Welcome to Night Vale and Alice Isn’t Dead podcasts. He lives with his wife in New York. Jeffrey Cranor co-writes the Welcome to Night Vale and Within the Wire podcasts. He also co-creates theater and dance pieces with choreographer/wife Jillian Sweeney. They live in New York.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing. I bought two hardcovers back in October (one for me, on for his birthday) and I did not regret it ! The book is beautiful, a vibrant yellow with purple on the pages. I'm a huge fan of WTNV and the majority of Joseph Fink's work in general. This book is creepy, weird, interesting, and overall I recommend it

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I really liked it! Welcome to Night Vale stuff is always fun, creepy and an adventure to experience. The characters were and had interesting arcs, there was a great discussion about the cross section of science and religion, and it's just a fun time!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from It Devours? Yeah, I’ve read that book The second published-as-a-book-and-not-a-podcast-or-recording-of-a-live-show Night Vale story is a solid story of the collision of faith and science; the isolation of being an outsider; the difficulty of learning to trust; and the toothy benevolence of a Smiling God. It follows two new characters, Nilanjana and Darryl, as they attempt to uncover the truth about holes opening up in the ground all over Night Vale while at the same time trying to navigate their growing connection in spite of their vastly different worldviews. As a long time fan of the podcast which spawned this book, I found that this book captured the feel of Welcome to Night Vale more thoroughly than the previous entry, thanks to a stronger focus on the world building that has happened over the past five years of podcasts. At the same time, there was space in the narrative to have characters introduced in the first book show up in a way that made sense for the small town setting.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved it As usual, Night vale never disappoints. I read their previous book, listened to the podcast and attended 2 live shows. It devours is exactly as you would expect if you listened to the podcast before, and if you haven't I believe you would still appreciate the story, as you don't necessarily need to know about the characters to understand the story.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Definitely not disappointed!! This book was a lot better than I thought it would be! I read the first Welcome to Nightvale book, and kind of expected the same thing. Don't get me wrong, the first book was really good, but I think this one is definitely my favourite! I was at the edge of my seat the whole time, not wanting to put the book down. The characters were very likeable, and quirky, and the plot was complex and riveting. Not necessarily a light and breezy read, but a fun one that will keep you guessing until the very end!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Creepy, crazy good Once again, Fink and Cranor have taken the weird and beautiful magic of the Welcome to Night Vale podcast and turned it into a novel that's nearly impossible to put down. It Devours! helps to flesh out well known characters, and how Night Vale itself works all while asking important questions about the nature of science and religion.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from As good as the podcast 4 stars. WTNV is one of my favourite podcasts, and their second novel 'It Devours!' channels the spirit of it perfectly. I whipped through the book in one sitting - it’s an engrossing and enjoyable read. It was great to have a story centred on Carlos, giving him more depth, emotion and flaws. The timeline and certain plot points had me scratching my head a bit, so I think I need to go back and relisten to some episodes. Overall, ‘It Devours!’ is an improvement over the first novel - which was pretty good too!

Editorial Reviews

“A lively romp in a bizarre world [and] a thoughtful, touching examination of how science and religion might coexist both in Night Vale and beyond.”
