about

After a decade apart, childhood sweethearts reconnect by chance in New York Times bestselling author Christina Lauren’s touching, romantic novel Love and Other Words…how many words will it take for them to figure out where it all went wrong?

The story of the heart can never be unwritten.

Macy Sorensen is settling into an ambitious if emotionally tepid routine: work hard as a new pediatrics resident, plan her wedding to an older, financially secure man, keep her head down and heart tucked away.

But when she runs into Elliot Petropoulos—the first and only love of her life—the careful bubble she’s constructed begins to dissolve. Once upon a time, Elliot was Macy’s entire world—growing from her gangly bookish friend into the man who coaxed her heart open again after the loss of her mother...only to break it on the very night he declared his love for her.

Told in alternating timelines between Then and Now, teenage Elliot and Macy grow from friends to much more—spending weekends and lazy summers together in a house outside of San Francisco devouring books, sharing favorite words, and talking through their growing pains and triumphs. As adults, they have become strangers to one another until their chance reunion. Although their memories are obscured by the agony of what happened that night so many years ago, Elliot will come to understand the truth behind Macy’s decade-long silence, and will have to overcome the past and himself to revive her faith in the possibility of an all-consuming love.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wow! This is my first read by Lauren Christina and will not be my last. It was heartwarming, deep, moving and such a joy to read. I can't recommend this enough, and only hope that I fall as in love with the characters and storyline in their other books I plan to devour!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from They did it again. As always when reading Christina Lauren, I could not put it down. I've read nearly every book the brilliant duo has written, but this one is my absolute favourite. I fell in love with Macy and Elliot, I laughed, and left tears on the pages. Highly recommend!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Definitely a feel-good read I LOVED this book!! This is the first book I read of Christina Lauren’s, and I intend to read more of her work in the future. This book was completely soul-soothing, and had me bewildered and in awe of the main characters’ relationship; from when they started out as friends to when they developed a romantic relationship. I grew to love both characters and ached to see how they would end up in the end. Could NOT put this book down (even though it took me a while to read; mainly, because I’m a slow reader). But whenever I put the book down, I always looked forward to getting back to it. I’m so sad, now, and feel complete nostalgia for this book.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved it! A great story about love, friendship, and loss. I really liked the transition between past and present. I enjoyed seeing the relationship between May and Ellot grow and change. It was a heartwarming and heartbreaking story that was great from beginning to end.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Really Good Made me cry. Still steamy even though it was WF instead of their usual romance. I just thought it could have gone even more in depth into the emotions. #plumreview

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Heart Wrenching AND Heart Warming As a long-time fan of Christina Lauren, I didn't know what to expect with their "first women's fiction work" but it really delivered! You will cry (be ready!), and it was tender, passionate and endearing. I really fell in love with not only Elliot and Macy, but I fell in love with the sense of family between Macy and her father Duncan, and Elliot and his family. 'Love and Other Words' is a captivating story about Macy Sorenson and Elliot Petropoulos, jumping between their adolescence and their current adulthood. It really is an absolute pleasure to read, and a wonderful addition to the Christina Lauren catalog.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Makes me feel all warm & fuzzy inside I devoured this book within a day. If you've read any of Christina Lauren's other work, you'll definitely love this although it is different than some of their other books I've read - it's way better and definitely my favourite. I was skeptical at first about the back and forth between the past and present but a few chapters in, I really loved it. The past showed us how Macy & Elliot first met as teens and became the absolute best of friends while the present shows us a grown up Macy, doing her residency in San Francisco when she runs into Elliot, who she hasn't spoken to in a decade. The past is a story of pure friendship and first love and it's so, so wonderful to see. The past goes through the motions of running into that person a decade later and brings us closer to revealing what happened between them and why such a long time has passed since they've spoken. The entire story left me feeling all warm & fuzzy inside and it's definitely something I'd pick up again when I need a pick me up. The only complaint I have is that the end comes far too quickly. I would've loved to see more there, for sure. Sequel?! :)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This book was emotional. It was touching. It broke my heart and made me cry. I absolutely loved it! Love and Other Words is Christina Lauren's first attempt at Women's Fiction. This is my first 5 star read of 2018. This book was emotional. It was touching. It broke my heart and made me cry. I absolutely loved it! The narrator is 28 year old Macy Sorensen (she's a doctor who works in pediatrics). The story is told in alternating timelines between Then and Now. Usually I am not a fan of dual timelines, because I never find the past as interesting as the present. But in this case this format worked really well. I was mesmerized by Macy's younger years (the past starts 15 years before and goes until 11 years before). The past was leading us to a dramatic event that happened on New Year's Eve 11 years before. I absolutely could not wait to get to that time period. But I found that the story built so nicely to get to that point. The revelation came at the perfect time in the story. The story takes place in California (in and around San Francisco and Berkeley). The book features romance. But it is about more than that. It is about friendship and loss too. Macy has learned to shut off her emotions. But she has to figure out what she wants to do. She has Sean, an older well-established artist. Or she has Elliot, her childhood best friend who she has not spoken to in years. What made this book special for me was how much that it made me feel. The story was captivating. But it was also extremely emotional and I loved that about this story! This book made me feel so much. I absolutely loved it! Thanks to Simon & Schuster Canada for providing me with a copy of this book.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from First Love Feels <3 4.5 stars! If I could have a new Christina Lauren book every day, I would be a happy camper. Love and Other Words, though a different tone than most of their novels, does not disappoint. It is a story of first love, last love, trauma, family, and belonging that hits all the right notes. Because it is a first love story, and we see the protagonists growing up, it is much more tame than something like Beautiful Bastards, but equally as good in its highly moving depictions of the beauty and complexities of what it means to find that person who completes you (especially so young) only pushing further to prove what a wide range of skill these ladies have. I laughed, I cried, I took a stroll down memory lane with my first love, and I LOVED every minute of its downright adorableness. It would've been a 5 star read except I felt like the ending wrapped up too quickly-- I loved it that much, the only flaw was that I didn't want it to end. MORE! MORE! MORE! *Thank you to Edelweiss for an ARC of this novel in exchange for an honest review* #indigoemployee
