about

[A] heartwarming story a la Bridget Jones' Diary with a twist Colgan folds in a colorful cast of characters and whips up an easy, sweet read."-USA Today
Issy Randall can bake. No, Issy can create stunning, mouthwateringly divine cakes. After a childhood spent in her beloved Grampa Joe's bakery, Issy has undoubtedly inherited his talent. She's much better at baking than she is at filing, so when she's laid off from her desk job and loses her boyfriend, Issy decides to open her own little cafe. But she soon learns that her piece-of-cake recipe for a fresh start might be a little more complicated than throwing some sugar and butter together.
A smart, quirky contemporary confection of recipes and friendship, Meet Me at the Cupcake Cafe is about how life might not always taste like you expect, but there's always room for dessert!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from A Cute and Delicious Read! Caution: This book may contain recipes and descriptions that lead to an overconsumption of cupcakes and/or other baked goods. What a cute and cozy read! I have no idea why but for me this was a book equivalent of a romantic comedy circa the 90's featuring Meg Ryan. It was just a sweet (mind the pun) and warmhearted read that was good for the soul. For those that like to bake, baking recipes are included at the beginning of nearly every chapter. I cannot personally attest to the difficulty of the recipes in actuality but they read as if they would be good for beginners. There's nothing worse than when recipes are included which are only helpful for the Julia Childs' of the baking world. Nope. That did not appear to be the case with these recipes. Fun, easy-ish, and delicious for all. This was a cute and quick read. I wouldn't say the story or plot was anything beyond what was expected but it was still an enjoyable read that gave me the taste of a romantic comedy film in book format. ***Thank you to the publisher for supplying me with a copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review***

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This was the first of Jenny Colgan's books I bought and have since then gone through several more. They're interesting, well written and have managed to surprise me in places for not being as predictable as typical "girly fiction". That said this book is sweet at times (and that's not just because of the recipes included at the beginning of the chapters), it's heartfelt and I was able to connect with the characters and feel glad when things went well.I was first attracted to this book as I love cooking and cakes but have never looked back and just finished the sequel after getting it for Christmas.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Sweet and Sugary and lots to Love What could be better than a wonderful story interspersed with mouth watering recipes. Meet Me at the Cupcake Café is a winner on both these points. Issy Randall grew up in her grandfather's bakery learning to bake from an early age. After she is laid off from her job at a local real estate firm, she decides to open a bakery/café, after all, everyone keeps telling her she is a natural in the kitchen. Things don't go exactly as planned, but that doesn't stop Issy. She keeps trying new recipes and baking more. Along the way, she makes good friends with the women she hired to help run the café and with the banker who arranged her business loan. If only she could get beyond her ex-boyfriend, who was also the boss who fired her, then life would be perfect. Issy is the kind of person that I would include as a personal friend. She cares for her elderly grandfather as well as the welfare of her staff. She has a good grip on what it takes to run a business and turn it into not just a money making venture, but a fixture in the community. I'll admit, that while I was reading this book, I experience severe cupcake cravings. In fact, it was so bad that I resorted to a boxed mix, the white cake with coloured sprinkles. Oh, they were so good, but I'm sure they were nothing compared to the ones that Issy would have made. Included in the book are numerous recipes from Issy's grandfather. Most of them I found very appealing and would enjoy re-creating in my kitchen.
