Reviews

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I Love This I love this book of poems so much; I don’t even know where to begin. Rupi Kaur is one of my favourite poets and after watching her perform her poetry live, I have fallen even more in love with her work. The poems in this book are very personal and they give you a glimpse into her life. If you’ve ever dealt with love and heartbreak, you are sure to find a poem that will resonate with your own experiences. #plumreview

Rated 1 out of 5 by from I was disappointed I was super excited about this book, as it was raved about everywhere. Thankfully I bought it used so I did not spend a lot of money on it. It was a quick read, but I found the poems drab, and repetitious. They were insightful, sure, and i do not want to discredit her story/pain/experiences but I just could not get into them as deeply as everyone else seems to. I am thankful that I did not buy both books together, as I have no intention of reading the other book.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Speechless After Reading This is the first poetry book I have ever read. I was speechless when I finished reading it. So open, raw, candid and most of all relevant. I am very fortunate to have found a true love and he is part of my every day. But as in the book I have experienced in variation all the chapters, love, loss, trauma, abuse and healing. The journey of being a women and those moments in life that makes us who we are. Some of the passages that touched me personally are on the following pages 53, 95, 106, 157 and 191. So glad that this artist took pen to paper.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from powerful Beautiful. I decided to take a risk and step out of my comfort zone and read a poetry book. I thought I was going to be reading very tacky rhyming poems but what I read was beautiful. Rupi Kaur brings the reader through the emotions that allow a young woman to stay connected to who she is, no matter what turmoil she has been through in her life. This book made me think back to many different parts of my life and put light on things that I have been through and made me feel incredible that I have achieved so much in my life

Rated 5 out of 5 by from sooooo good this book was so good and so powerful. was sexual at some points but was a great read.
Date published: 2018-08-30
Rated 5 out of 5 by from so powerful definitely written for a more mature audience but it was very insightful that more than just i go though lots of these feelings. the way it was written reminded me of my own like which made me feel sad others are going through this yet comforted because they know exactly as i feel. i would recommend this book to many others most people think its just a sexual book but its really not, its about much for than the sex, its the every day stuff and how they all pile every day. i only wish i could write out my feelings and experiences as she did

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wow This was so unexpected! I thought it would be overrated, but it actually told a beautiful story about love, loss and heartbreak. 10/10 would recommend.
Date published: 2018-08-06
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good book! Didn't quite live up to the hype though. I think this might be a really subjective read. Some of the poems I was very personally connected to and found captivating and intense, while others poems just didn't interest me. I do commend the rawness of Kaur's writing though. And as an artist, I really appreciated Kaur's illustrative elements in relation to the stories she shared.
Date published: 2018-08-05
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Young demographic I would recommend this to younger unmarried readers without kids. It reminds me of a time when love was the most important, intense thing in my life. But not in a whimsical or appealing way, in a way that seems silly now and tbh, makes me feel old (at 32!). It for sure felt like it was for a younger generation still finding their partner and place in the world. But it was not the modern mass appeal sparse poetry book I wanted it to be.
Date published: 2018-08-02
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Perfect book for inspiration and love words. I loved the style of Rupi Kaur ! Sometimes, a few words are used to describe what she wants to pass as a message. The graphics are beautiful and this book is really easy to read on summer break. I plan to read her other book : ''The sun and her flowers''.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Pretentious The poems are very pretentious in my opinion, however i was moved by the emotion behind each poem. I bought it for the cover, and was pleasantly surprised that i wanted to read the entire thing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Solid Teaching Resource for Senior Students An important read for young people today. It may not speak to everyone, but it speaks to so many which is all that matters! A great teaching resource for senior level students (male and female) to understand a perspective on consent, rape culture, relationships and so much more. Could be used in so many subjects for students to engage with.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Hits home I wept. This book is covered in the stains of my tears on every single page. It's so raw and real and has so much heart behind it. I identify with it so much. The heartbreak was heart wrenching and the love was groundbreaking. I love this collection of poetry with all of my being.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Gorgeous Rupi Kaur's honesty and vulnerability helped make way for my own healing. Beautiful, elegant, and captivating. Probably the most read and re-read book I own. Her rawness also makes poetry so accessible and real to a so many readers, many who would not usually pick up a book of poetry.

Date published: 2018-06-14
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Modern, Impactful and Beautiful This is an amazing read. It is a modern type of poetry, so if anyone is here for some long, classical written sonnets I would keep looking. However, all the things Kaur talks about in this book such as sexual assault, love, relationships, family etc. are very real topics that are approached in a beautiful way. I read this book in about 2 hours, could not put it down. I still go back to it time and time again, to get those feelings that the poems bring out in me. If you still feel unsure about purchasing it, just check her FB or IG, she posts a lot of her poems there. Enjoy!

I feel like maybe at a different time in my life I may have related to it a bit more but unfortunately I just did not. I feel like if you have suffereed from abuse, have recently gone through a bad breakup or are in a tumoltous relationship then you may enjoy this more then I did.

The verses are so beautiful and poignant. The illustrations that accompany some of the poems are really nice touches too. I would without a doubt read it again. Rated 4 out of 5 by from Devoured I liked this book of poetry. The writer takes us through the stages of relationships; I didn't feel they were all about romantic partners, I found myself thinking of family and friends sometimes. It is a bit choppy and I appreciate the other reviewers strong warnings and pointing out the simplicity of some of the poems, but I think you can come up with your own meanings as well.
Date published: 2018-05-08
Rated 3 out of 5 by from A little too simple Although there were some thought-provoking and deep poems, most of it seemed a little too simple. Was hoping for a little bit more

Date published: 2018-04-29
Rated 1 out of 5 by from No depth, tumblr type ramblings The only passages that aren't basic are ones to do with race/immigration/family. Otherwise, you probably won't connect unless you're a 16 year old who has had their heart broken for the first time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great poetry! This book is amazing. The way Rupi talks about life makes it so easy to relate. It's cliché to say, but it's like realizing that you are not the only one feeling the way you feel.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Girl power! I bought this book on a whim because everyone I know had already purchased it, and I have no regrets! This book is very empowering towards women and men alike, each poem covers issues that everyone will have at some point in their lifetime. Each poem pulls at your heartstrings in a different way and every one makes you think and ponder.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This book touched my soul This book touched my soul. Honestly Milk and Honey was the first poetry book I’ve ever read and with every poem I read, I dove deeper into the complex emotions. There was a poem written every couple of pages that I felt like I could relate too. It made me stop and read the poems out loud to my friends so they could enjoy the beautiful words too. “do not look for healing at the feet of those who broke you” I was always nervous that I wasn’t going to completely understand the book because a lot of times, poems can be hard to decipher. But, I’m glad to say it was very nice and easy to comprehend, which made me love it even more. Milk and Honey pulled at my heart strings. There were 4 sections of poems all together called: The Hurting The Loving The Breaking The Healing With these 4 categories I was taken on a journey of ups and downs, disappointment, happiness, sadness. The negative and positive thoughts became equal. Discussing topics that people don’t like saying out loud. Feminism is a big part of these poems as well. Trying to ease our female minds with wisdom and advice, it really made me stop and think long and hard. “how you love yourself is how you teach others to love you” Thank you Rupi, you have enlightened me a lot during my journey through Milk and Honey. I can’t wait to continue on with her other book that was recently released. 5 stars for the amazing emotional connection I got whilst reading this magnificent book.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Felt Connected I heard from a co worker that she loved Milk and Honey, and that she would even bookmark poems that connected with her and she would reread them every now and then, the great thing was I got this as a birthday present a week later and my co worker was definitely right. The poems in the book show different stages of her life, which I definitely connected with. The poems were inspirational and heartfelt, and there are poems within the book that I always end up going back too. Definitely a must read!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not great I thought after all the hype I would give this book a read. I don't read poetry so perhaps this is why I didn't enjoy it. The words and content were not speaking to me as they do in most books. Couldn't connect at all with it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The beginning This book started it all...the beginning of my poetry obsession. Throughout this book, you will feel every emotion imaginable. Something I love about it is that I can read it over and over, and each time, a different meaning of my own is ascribed to the poetry. Kaur wrote about her own experiences and yet, you will most likely be able to relate to many. This gives a sense of empowerment, and a feeling that you are not alone. In terms of the structure of writing, it is an easy read. BUT, as a warning, the context of some of the poems do contain highly sensitive content. personally though, I would definitely recommend.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Way over hyped for very average poetry I bought this book awhile ago after seeing pictures of a few poems on twitter. After a bit into the book I quickly realised that those pictures I seen were everywhere because they were pretty much the only highlights of the book. This book wasn't bad, but it wasn't great. Very average.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The power of words "Your art is not about how many people like your work your art is about if your heart likes your work if your soul likes your work it's about how honest you are with yourself and you must never trade honesty for relatability" - Rupi Kaur In reading these pages and the reviews of this collection by rupi kaur, I thought to myself, what makes a good poem, who decides what is poetry and what is not? I don't think there is a simple or one answer to this. Poetry is self-expression and I don't think we are in any position to judge anyone's words, experiences and emotions. This collection is raw, open, honest, heart breaking and optimistic. The sentiment on self love echoed in these poems and the untapped strength within all of us is something so universal and beautiful. Thank for making me see that, Rupi Kaur

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth the hype. Rupi Kaur gets a lot of smack. But I truly believe that poetry is a very individual experience and also, that you have to be willing to let yourself be consumed by the words. If you dedicate yourself to feeling what Kaur felt, and relating it to your own experiences, it will be a worthwhile read. Her poetry about femininity, race, love and heartbreak are so eloquently written in so few words. Her drawings only add to it, and are just beautiful as well. Talented, talented writer. Loved this book and if you haven't read her second one, The Sun And Her Flowers, I recommend that as well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I am glad I decided to give this book a try I've never read a poetry book before, so I wasn't sure what to expect with this. I had feared that it wouldn't hold my attention and that I wouldn't enjoy it. I decided, however, to give into the intrigue and picked up a copy at my local Chapters. I'm glad I did. I found myself flipping page after page, eager to experience the feelings in the upcoming lines. Any writing that can elicit such emotion is A1 in my book. This book is strong and powerful and I have much respect for the author for writing this.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from OMG!! I never thought it was going to be this graphic. The poems are real, full of emotion and may even open up a few wounds you rather have left closed. Its a very raw book but I did like it. One of those higher in the bookshelf books. #plumreview

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Every woman should have a copy! The cover is what initially caught my attention, I spent a few minutes going through the pages of the book and had to buy it. Im sure any woman can read this, and relate to some of the poetry; from heartache, pain and suffering to healing and finding love again. This book stays by my bedside and I go back to it over and over. For those of you who are unsure about the content, borrow it from a girlfriend or pop into an Indigo location, find a spot and see if you'll love it like I did!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Like the Title says, it really is Milk and Honey I've heard about this book for a while but I never brought myself to actually buy it. A friend lent it to me and I was overblown by the power in this woman's words. I am completely sold, I love what she writes about and as a woman of colour seeing another woman of colour being a successful writer, I am so happy to enjoy and support her work. Highly recommend, the book touches the soul.

Editorial Reviews

Rupi Kaur’s writing echoes of artistry and wisdom which is seen in the work of those that have been writing for years. (Samira Sawlani, Media Diversified)
