The New York Times bestselling graphic novel sensation from Noelle Stevenson, based on her beloved and critically acclaimed web comic. Kirkus says, “If you’re going to read one graphic novel this year, make it this one.”

Nemeses! Dragons! Science! Symbolism! All these and more await in this brilliantly subversive, sharply irreverent epic from Noelle Stevenson. Featuring an exclusive epilogue not seen in the web comic, along with bonus conceptual sketches and revised pages throughout, this gorgeous full-color graphic novel has been hailed by critics and fans alike as the arrival of a “superstar” talent (NPR.org).

Nimona is an impulsive young shapeshifter with a knack for villainy. Lord Ballister Blackheart is a villain with a vendetta. As sidekick and supervillain, Nimona and Lord Blackheart are about to wreak some serious havoc. Their mission: prove to the kingdom that Sir Ambrosius Goldenloin and his buddies at the Institution of Law Enforcement and Heroics aren't the heroes everyone thinks they are.

But as small acts of mischief escalate into a vicious battle, Lord Blackheart realizes that Nimona's powers are as murky and mysterious as her past. And her unpredictable wild side might be more dangerous than he is willing to admit.

Noelle Stevenson has been nominated for a Harvey Award and was awarded theSlateCartoonist Studio Prize for Best Web Comic in 2012 forNimona. A graduate of the Maryland Institute College of Art, Noelle is the cowriter ofLumberjanes. She lives in Los Angeles.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing I loved it! This is honestly one of my absolute favourite graphic novels! The palette used is so bright and colourful, and the drawing style is very fitting (I'm not sure how to explain the style exactly but if you do see it you can tell that it fits). Each individual character in my opinion is very well developed and you get comfortable and care for them as you continue to read. They each have an in depth background and actually seem like real live people. I especially loved the relationships that happened throughout the book as each character interacts with one another and build connections. (also the two main guy characters are TOTALLY gay for each other it's so obvious honestly). In regards to characters I also really like how you could assign each character a stereotype and even though the characters show some of these stereotypical characteristics, Stevenson still has the characters go outside of these boxes and almost "mocks" these archetypes in a humorous way. The plot of this story isn't quite complicated and rather then having one large event that carries all the way throughout the narrative, this story has small events that LEAD UP to the big event. This was originally an online graphic novel, so it's understandable if Stevenson purposefully wrote it this way. It really keeps the reader on their toes and at the edge of their seat and with this kind of plot with these types of characters it really benefited the story overall. And even still the story has lots of small jokes and a ton of humour that helped with characterization. Absolutely fantastic read! I recommend to anyone who has time to spare and wants a nice laugh with great characters!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from If I am the first person to recommend NIMONA to you, drop whatever you’re doing and check it out Review courtesy of All Things Urban Fantasy: If I am the first person to recommend NIMONA to you, drop whatever you’re doing and check out the three first chapters, available as an excerpt. If you don’t fall in love with Nimona and Lord Ballister Blackheart, there is possibly something terribly wrong with you - or your sense of humour. This graphic novel features a strange mix of tech and fantasy I found automatically endearing. Dueling knights and dragons share the pages with supercomputers and scientists, and it works so well that you don’t even blink when these aspects mix. Nimona’s strange powers seem purely magical, but it’s a scientist who comes closest to understanding her - or at least containing her. Although the book is named after Nimona, the red-headed, hot-headed shapeshifter, the true hero for me was Lord Ballister Blackheart, a villain with a strict moral code. He used to be one of the good guys, until he was betrayed and made to be a scapegoat for the secretly sinister Institution of Law Enforcement and Heroics. It cost him his arm, but it also cost him his best friend. He is truly horrified when Nimona’s antics cause someone’s death during one of their disruptive attacks; this isn’t how he operates, and although he is a villain, it’s not how he “does things”. Nimona, on the other hand, has morals as shifty as her shape. It has enough action and humour to appeal to younger teens, and becomes emotionally charged enough to appeal to older readers. As Nimona’s mysterious origins and powers start to create more problems for the Institution and for Lord Blackheart, readers become more conflicted about the morality of the various characters. By the end, it’s almost deliciously heart breaking. For a book with a truly sharp, unique illustration style and characters that will stay with you long after you’ve reread the epilogue, get your hands on NIMONA. I have yet to find someone who didn’t adore it, regardless of age.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from I don't know how to feel about this The art was cute and I really liked the characters but the direction of the story wasn't what I thought it would be like. Plot wise it was kind of weak but I really liked the characters so it made up for that. Plus the word bubbles and the words itself were hard to read... And why is this called Nimona, I feel like this should've been named after Ballister Blackheart...but whatever.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely Great! Noelle Stevenson is someone that can do no wrong, graphic novel wise. I absolutely love her series Lumberjanes, and Nimona is certainly no different. Nimona is a steampunk, medieval, modern times mash-up story of good vs. evil; of government control; and of the meaning of true family and friendship. It is smart, hilarious, and punches you right in the feels. It’s sarcastic but serious and Stevenson has great skill creating a story that draws the reader in and keeps them interested until the very last page. Even the ending, which can be considered a cliff-hanger, is satisfying. The reader is not left wanting to know what happens next, but is happy and satisfied with imagining where characters’ lives may go. At times, I was busting out laughing. Stevenson has a knack for just slipping something funny in (i.e. watch for characters’ names) and it catches you off guard. Overall, it was a surprising and refreshing story, which has so many different ways of reading it, that everyone will walk away with something different.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from !Go Nimona I had read parts of Nimona when it was still a webcomic, so I was very excited to read the whole story in book format. I really enjoyed it! Nimona is such a spunky character, it's hard not to fall in love with her immediately. Plus, the drawings are so cute and unique! The ending really surprised me, but I enjoyed it anyways.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of the best things I've read this year I loved this book so much. Fabulous story, great art. Nimona and Blackheart are the most likable 'evil' characters you're going to find.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A spunky good time! One of the most charming reads I've read this year so far, "Nimona" is a bundle of joy, excitement, and nerves. Noelle Stevenson has created some memorable characters in Nimona, who is this spunky and energized shapeshifter with much of a backstory that will surprise you, in Lord Ballister Blackheart, Nimona's reluctant mentor in villainy who becomes this endearing figure you look up to, and Sir Ambrosius Goldenloin, with that name alone proves to be the radiating point of most wacky humour. There are a few little bones I could pick about "Nimona" (inconsistent typography, uneven climax) but the illustrations stood out for me. I love the crisp silhouettes and facial features of the characters, reminding me a lot of the drawings by Kate Beaton and of animated cartoons like Adventure Time. The visual presentation and the quirkiness of this enchanting story will translate well to the big screen, and of course this has been noted by studios with the recent news that "Nimona" has been picked up by Fox Animation. This is excellent news - more people need to read this graphic novel (if they haven't already)!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Hard to get into, but much better towards the end The first four chapters of this graphic novel made me want to put the book down and never pick it up again. It felt childish and just too "over the top" and I really struggled with it. So I put it down and thought I'd never again pick it up. But then I decided to push through after hearing a review that it would get better after the initial chapters. And I am happy to say that it did get a lot better and it really developed into a deep and interesting story. It was fast to read, and the characters had a lot of depth despite my initial feeling that they were just completely crazy. The plot was surprising and it was fun to read from the so called villains POV and learning that everything is not always as it seems. Reading this novel also kind of made me want to turn my own novel into a graphic novel, and I might have given it a try had I been able to draw. So I do recommend this as a read for those interested in graphic novels. For those, like me, who are completely new to the whole graphic novel-comic book thing, I do however recommend starting with something else.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Review from This is the Story of My(Reading) Life This graphic novel is everything. The humour and wit just add to a really brilliant story. I love Nimona and her character arc. The way it was developed was phenomenal. This book made me realize that I really don't read much antihero stories. Nimona's boss, Blackheart is the villain, except he is way to moral to actually pull of being a bad villain. I loved that part. And his relationship/history with Sir Goldenloin kept hinting and the hints made me super excited. I am so hoping that there is more Nimona to come in the future. There is so much more that can be explored with these characters and world.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Fun with dragons. A fun, quirky read that threatens to break the fourth wall at the start. It presents some moral conundrums, but in that predictable way that teen literature can.
Date published: 2015-06-29
Rated 5 out of 5 by from I'm a shark! I've read Nimona online where it originated and I can promise that you won't be disappointed. It's funny, witty, and puts an intriguing, entertaining spin on the good-evil go-to between arch nemeses. Nimona is a lovable character, and you just don't know what to expect next of the sidekick and supervillain team (nor what Sir Goldenloin has up his sleeve). The art is colourful and well done, Stevenson's style is super unique and fun. The book is just as fabulous in print as it is as a webcomic, and anybody can and will enjoy it!

Editorial Reviews

“Those of you who haven’t read Nimona yet are lucky, because you can buy the fantasy comic in book form instead of waiting for Noelle to post an update twice a week. Seriously, that wait was always excruciating.”
