about

From award-winning author Sharon Draper comes Out of My Mind, the story of a brilliant girl who cannot speak or write.

“If there is one book teens and parents (and everyone else) should read this year, Out of My Mind should be it” (Denver Post).

Melody is not like most people. She cannot walk or talk, but she has a photographic memory; she can remember every detail of everything she has ever experienced. She is smarter than most of the adults who try to diagnose her and smarter than her classmates in her integrated classroom—the very same classmates who dismiss her as mentally challenged, because she cannot tell them otherwise. But Melody refuses to be defined by cerebral palsy. And she’s determined to let everyone know it…somehow.

In this breakthrough story—reminiscent of The Diving Bell and the Butterfly—from multiple Coretta Scott King Award-winner Sharon Draper, readers will come to know a brilliant mind and a brave spirit who will change forever how they look at anyone with a disability.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This book definitely pulled my heart strings We read this book in grade 5 with our teacher. While we read this book we all cold feel exactly the same emotions Melody was feeling, through some of the ups and some of the downs. We all cried and laughed along with her sad heartfelt moments and her humors jokes!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Will open your eyes There is ability in disability and we as a society need to recognize that more and work as hard as we can to provide a full and participatory life for all our children.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Everyone should read this eye-opener This was a beautiful book, told from the point of view of a young girl with cerebral palsy. As someone who works with children with special needs, many of them non-verbal, this book really resonated with me. It gave a realistic view of what many children face in the school system and was a reminder that you really cannot judge a person by the way they look. I recommend this book for anyone who cares about someone with special needs and to anyone else who doesn't but would like a glimpse into what life can be like for one of these individuals.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Saron Draper's best book This is an amazing book.  I couldn't put it down!  The beginning was more the story about her.  The end was amazing!  Melody has a photographic memory but can't talk, walk or write!  She is VERY smart though.  When she finally finds a way to use her voice, everyone let's her down.  Sharon Draper defiantly did a good job on this novel.

Editorial Reviews

"Like Stephen Hawking, who becomes her hero, Melody discovers that her inner strength and intelligence are more reliable than most of the humans around her. She becomes an activist for herself, even as Draper challenges those who read her story to become activists for those who are different." -The Columbus Dispatch
