about

It began as rumours. Whispers at dinner parties. Warnings about bad dates with a Canadian celebrity. Then, seemingly out of nowhere, superstar CBC broadcaster Jian Ghomeshi revealed his interest in "rough sex" in a long Facebook post, and a scandal of unprecedented scale descended on the radio host.

What the public did not know was that months before Ghomeshi's emotional post, Canadaland podcaster Jesse Brown and Toronto Star journalist Kevin Donovan were quietly pursuing serious allegations against him. In Secret Life, Donovan takes us inside the Star's investigation. Step by step, he explores the story as only he can: the media frenzy, his own personal and professional doubts, the women who came forward with stories about an alleged dark side of a national idol, and Ghomeshi's ignominious firing and dramatic criminal trial. Taking us behind the scenes, Donovan sheds light on the journalistic process and the complexity of gathering information about a highly sensitive matter from named and confidential sources, including those women who feared it was their word against a beloved public figure's.

Secret Life is a thought-provoking account of the landmark Ghomeshi exposé that sparked a nation-wide discussion on sexual assault, the cult of celebrity, and the politics of power and gender in the workplace.

Kevin Donovan is an investigative reporter and editor at the Toronto Star. A thirty-year veteran of the paper, he has won two Governor General's Awards (Michener) for public service journalism, three National Newspaper Awards, and three Canadian Association of Journalists Awards. He is also the author of ORNGE: The Star Investigation ...

Rated 4 out of 5 by from And the public thought he was great This was a well documented expose on Jian Ghomeshi and it showed how the public didn't really know him. It was an eye opening, shocking revelation.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from "a must read" John Gormley, Saskatoon Star Phoenix: ". . .a new book this month is a must read for every Canadian.Investigative reporter Kevin Donovan’s Secret Life: the Jian Ghomeshi Investigation chronicles the unmasking of the serial abuser and former CBC broadcaster Jian Ghomeshi, whose fall from grace was as stunning as it was swift two years ago. Donovan tells the stories of 17 women and two men who alleged harassment or abuse by Ghomeshi. Exploring the pathology of physical and sexual abuse, this book directly confronts many of the questions and stereotypes about relationships between abusers and their victims. It is a sobering wake up call for all of us to do better." Jonathan Kay, The Walrus: "The facts contained in Secret Life are lurid and unsettling. But the investigation Donovan describes constitutes a high point in the history of modern Canadian journalism." Anne Kingston, Maclean's: "Donovan outlines the sensitivities, challenges and frictions involved in chasing and publishing the story and offers various re-enactments, including crisis-management meetings between lawyers, the CBC and Ghomeshi. Along the way he drops intriguing details, including phone calls between then Star publisher John Cruickshank, a regular on Q’s media panel, and Ghomeshi during the paper’s investigation."

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Self Serving Not impressed with this book. The first chapter deals with the jilted ex...who if you were to believe her story Ghomeshi should be in jail for attempted murder or 1st degree bodily harm and sexual assault. It is just too far fetched. I can go on but this book just serves Kevin Donavan and the Star. If you read Jian Ghomeshi's facebook post it seems to me that his version of what happened is correct. Save your money. The book I can't wait for is Mr. Ghomeshi's truthful version of what happened.
