about

When is a debt ever fully paid?

Penny and Hattie are sisters in a small town, bound tight to the point of knots. They share a secret they cannot escape, even while it pulls them apart. One night, a match is lit, and Penny’s terrible husband is killed – a marriage going up in flames, and offering the potential of a new life. The sisters retreat into their family home – a house of secrets and memories – and try to live in the shadow of what they put in motion. But Penny’s husband is not the only thing they are hiding, from the outside world and from each other. Under a cloud of long-held resentments, sibling rivalry, and debts unpaid, the bonds of sisterhood begin to crack. How long will Penny and Hattie demand the unthinkable of each other? How often will they say, “You owe me,” and when will it ever be enough?

Rated 4 out of 5 by from enjoyed this one Thank you Crooked Lane Books for sending me a finished copy of this debut by Canadian novelist, Laurie Petrou. I enjoyed this one. A domestic suspense about two sisters, Hattie and Penny, and their complex relationship built on lies, jealousy and secrets. The rivalry between the girls runs deep and neither sister has the upper hand, until one decision changes everything. An abusive marriage leads one sister to commit the ultimate crime, but she desperately needs her sister’s help in order to pull it off and get away with it. A lie that will bind the girls for eternity, and also be their ultimate demise. A dysfunctional relationship between two sisters that will leave you loving and hating each of them equally. The buildup of tension between Hattie and Penny is so intense but you still don’t see the ending coming. The ending literally shocked me. It provided the perfect wrap up of the plot and each character’s development seamlessly. An addictive debut novel that will grab and hold your attention from the get-go. The author’s writing style was unique in comparison to other books of the same genre and content, with a storyline that was to the point and easy to follow. I already look forward to reading Petrou’s next piece of work. I recommend this one to suspense fiction fans who also like a mix of women’s fiction.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from AMAZING! What an incredible psychological thriller. It truly is unputdownable! Laurie Petrou is an amazing writer; her writing is almost poetic and filled with imagery. One of the best reads that I would highly recommend. I had mostly figured out the conclusion, but this did not take away from how satisfying it felt to read this book.
