about

An instant IndieBound bestseller!

Buffy the Vampire Slayer
meets Sky in the Deep in this bewitching, historical horror novel, perfect for fans of Holly Black and V.E. Schwab.

Seventeen-year-old Aderyn ("Ryn") only cares about two things: her family and her family's graveyard. And right now, both are in dire straits. Since the death of their parents, Ryn and her siblings have been scraping together a meager existence as gravediggers in the remote village of Colbren, which sits at the foot of a harsh and deadly mountain range that was once home to the fae. The problem with being a gravedigger in Colbren, though, is that the dead don't always stay dead.

The risen corpses are known as "bone houses," and legend says that they're the result of a decades-old curse. When Ellis, an apprentice mapmaker with a mysterious past, arrives in town, the bone houses attack with new ferocity. What is it that draws them near? And more importantly, how can they be stopped for good?

Together, Ellis and Ryn embark on a journey that will take them into the heart of the mountains, where they will have to face both the curse and the deeply-buried truths about themselves. Equal parts classic horror novel and original fairytale, The Bone Houses will have you spellbound from the very first page.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic book I’m not quite sure how to describe The Bone Houses - perhaps YA horror-fantasy? Beautifully written horror-fantasy that stresses the love and importance of family. With zombies. The central character is Ryn, a seventeen-year-old girl trying to keep her broken family together. Her mother is dead, and her father and uncle have disappeared, leaving Ryn and her two siblings alone in the world. Ryn spends her days gravedigging for her small village, and her nights watching for and destroying wandering bone houses. That’s where the zombies come in - the dead don’t always stay dead. They usually hide within the boundaries of a nearby forest, but with the arrival of a young map-maker named Ellis, the bone houses start coming out. Violence ensues. The premise sounds like it could be a campy story, but Lloyd-Jones has written this book with great depth and emotion. There’s a respect for the dead you don’t usually see in a traditional zombie story, which elevates The Bone Houses to an impressive level of storytelling. It’s touching and beautiful, and may just be one of my favourite books of the year. The. Year. I can’t recommend this book enough. Read it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Another 5 star novel from Emily Lloyd-Jones! The mental image of Ryn sauntering through town with an axe by her side will make my heart smile whenever I think of it. A scrappy young woman who worked hard as a gravedigger to support her family, and also voluntarily patrolled the edge of the mountain to stop bone houses from infiltrating her community. Even though most people in town didn’t believe in bone houses. A character who would stare down fear with reluctant obligation, Ryn made for an excellent guide for Ellis, who wished to venture deep into the mountains. Yes, the same mountains where the bone houses resided. *cue the dun dun dunnnnn* As I’ve come to expect from Lloyd-Jones, the back jacket description mentioned a scant 30% of the overall plot. The journey into the mountains was just the beginning of Ryn and Ellis’s adventure, and what started as a small idea quickly bloomed into a quest to not only stop the bone houses, but understand why they began attacking people. Through mythology, family revelations, and self-discovery, THE BONE HOUSES proved to be a mission with a heart. Creepy but not terrifying with a surprising amount of feels (I openly wept twice), if you love books with steady paces, oodles of surprises, and a melancholy feel by the end, THE BONE HOUSES is the book for you!

"I immediately fell into the world Emily Lloyd-Jones created, and then I barely came up for air! This is the most original, mythical-magical, undead story I have ever read. I mean, there's a dead goat -- and you're gonna fall in love with her. The feisty, axe-swinging gravedigger's daughter found a place in my heart, too. The imagination and wit astound me. I am a lifelong reader of Lloyd-Jones' books. What's next?"-Alena Deerwater, Gallery Bookshop
