Chris loves rockets and planets and pretending he's a brave astronaut, exploring the universe. Only one problem--at night, Chris doesn't feel so brave. He's afraid of the dark.
But when he watches the groundbreaking moon landing on TV, he realizes that space is the darkest dark there is--and the dark is beautiful and exciting, especially when you have big dreams to keep you company.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A surprisingly great book When I first picked up this book I didn't have high expectations. After all, Chris Hadfield is an astronaut, not a writer. I was wrong. 'The darkest dark' is a wonderfully written story about being afraid and how to cope with that fear. It teaches children that its alright to be afraid of something, but it shouldn't come in-between their dreams. And even though it ends with the often used trope that dreams came come true, it is a testament to the writing that the ending makes this cliché feel new.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful story! My 3 and half year old loves this book. It totally got her interested in planets and space. Also, after reading the book we played a youtube video of Chris singing space oddity - now she walks around and sings "ground control to major tom" ...
Date published: 2017-02-15
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful What a beautifully illustrated book. The story is not too heavy on a lesson/moral although it does touch on sleeping in one's own bed at night and being afraid of the dark. It's got a hint of scariness, enough to intrigue my 3 year old but not scare him. I love that it is written by a Canadian icon and shares a bit of history (moon landing). I will be looking for more art by the Fan Brothers. This has been my go-to birthday gift for kids this year.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from excellent in story and illustrations As soon as I received notice that this book was coming out I reserved a copy. I LOVE it! This is a non-fiction picture book, written by Chris Hadfield, astronaut. When Chris was a little boy he loved to pretend play that he was an astronaut. When the first moon landing was shown on TV and he realized that space is the darkest dark there is, he knew he had a problem. He was afraid of the dark. It was then he made the decision to overcome that fear so that he could attain his dream. This is a wonderfully told story with gorgeous illustrations.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderfully Written & Illustrated First of all, who doesn't love Chris Hadfield? He of all people should know about the dark and he tells a wonderfully descriptive story. My son loved this book as did I.
Date published: 2017-01-20
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great book Really enjoyed this descriptive story. It does cover great detail of the dark but my son is a bit older and had no pronblems with it.
Date published: 2017-01-20
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful, but caution can be scary My daughter loved this book. I did too. However, the descriptions of the dark are a little scary, be careful and read it before you read it to your child. You'll need to decide for yourself if your child is ready for it. I'm glad I was able to share this with mine.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved it I bought a copy for myself and enjoyed it so much I also bought a copy for my younger brother. I was lucky enough to get them signed by Chris Hadfield at a chapters location! My brother received his signed copy as a Christmas gift and was very excited!
Date published: 2017-01-13
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great but be careful I think this is one of those books that is better for adults than the intended audience of children. My Chris-Hadfield-obsessed 4 year old was very excited for this book, but started manifesting "afraid of the dark" AFTER reading this book.
Date published: 2017-01-08
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Know the temperment of your audience We received this book as a gift from the grandparents, in large part because they felt that the story would help our son overcome his fear of the dark. As adults, we love the story and we hope that someday our son will want us to read this one to him again. But unfortunately, the author's description of the dark was a little too real (and scary) and we've had to temporarily shelve the book until he's a little older.
Date published: 2017-01-06
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome book! Wonderful story with wonderful illustrations. Sure to be enjoyed by readers young and old!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not just for kids while I was as work I did get a chance to read Chris Hadfield`s new book, The Darkest Dark. It is an amazing book and will appeal to all ages even though it is aimed at children. Adults older than 50ish seem to be most drawn to the pages relating the space events of 1969. By the end of the book, I had a lump in my throat and tears threatening to spill. The Darkest Dark is as much a coffee table book as it is a children`s book.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Everyone loves Chris the Astronaut! Great message about following your dreams. As a young boy Chris imagined travelling to space. When he saw Apollo 11 land on the moon he realized that to follow his dream of being an astronaut, he had to conquer his fear of darkness. Beautifully illustrated this inspiring story will appeal to ages five to seven.

Editorial Reviews

SELECTION 2016 - Junior Library Guild SelectionPRAISE FOR The Darkest Dark:"The Fan brothers (The Night Gardener) switch easily between fantasy elements and documentary images. . . . The idea that a famous astronaut was once afraid of the dark may win some recalcitrant bed-goers’ hearts, and readers with dreams of space travel will jump at this." --Starred Review, Publishers Weekly"Canadian astronaut Hadfield’s uplifting tale about facing one’s fears and finding strength and comfort in one’s dreams is eloquently illustrated by the Fan Brothers’ lustrous paintings." --School Library Journal"The Fans’ whimsical illustrations of nighttime scenes, in a dusky twilight palette, help illustrate Chris’ fears as well as his excitement about the boundless possibilities of exploration in the dark. A warm and empowering story of triumph over fears." --Booklist"The Darkest Dark soars as an inspiration for children trying to overcome a fear as well as dreamers wondering if they will triumph. Of course, the lesson here is ageless." --The Observer"The Darkest Dark is the perfect picture book for soothing night time fears, as well as for encouraging children to reach for their dreams. As Chris Hadfield demonstrates with aplomb, dreams 'actually can come true.'" --Children's Book Review
