What happens when you return to the real world after being in a fantastical one like Narnia? This YA debut by Laura E. Weymouth is perfect for fans of Melissa Albert’s The Hazel Wood and Lev Grossman’s The Magicians.

Six years ago, sisters Evelyn and Philippa Hapwell were swept away to a strange and beautiful kingdom called the Woodlands, where they lived for years. But ever since they returned to their lives in post-WWII England, they have struggled to adjust.

Ev desperately wants to return to the Woodlands, and Philippa just wants to move on. When Ev goes missing, Philippa must confront the depth of her sister’s despair and the painful truths they’ve been running from. As the weeks unfold, Philippa wonders if Ev truly did find a way home, or if the weight of their worlds pulled her under.

Walking the line between where fantasy and reality meet, this lyrical and magical novel is, above all else, an exploration of loss and healing, and what it means to find where you belong.

This edition uses deckle edges; the uneven paper edge is intentional.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Returning home is not always easy Many authors have written the stories of the adventures children have when they pass to another, a more magical world. Author Laura Weymouth has told the story of what happens after the children return to their own world. siblings Jamie, Philippa and Evelyn all have different feeling about their time spent in the Woodlands. Not one of them is left unchanged by their years long experience. Their stories are told from two viewpoints; first by Evelyn and then by older sister Philippa. I found the first part to be slower and harder to enjoy. She was really struggling and not in a good frame of mind. Evelyn was so young when their adventure began, and grew into an adult while in the Woodlands. During those formative years she formed bonds with the residents there that she could never break loose of. I was very moved by Philippa's dedication to her sister. There was nothing she wouldn't do for Evelyn to keep her happy and safe. It's been a long time since a work of fiction had me crying for characters chapter after chapter. This book should appeal to older teens as well as adult readers.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Completely and Utterly Devastating Honestly, this book blew me away. I had very high expectations and it met every single one and more. The characters and their development will leave you with your heart aching. It is raw, realistic and dark, but more importantly it's a beautiful piece of writing I will recommend to everyone.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from What Happens After Narnia *I received an advanced reader copy of this book from Indigo Books & Music Inc. in exchange for an honest review* The Light Between Worlds follows three siblings as they are thrust into a magical realm called the Woodlands. The Woodlands are at war and need help from each sibling in their fight for freedom. Ev, Philippa and Jaime grow older during their adventures before being thrust back into the real world at the exact moment they left it. But Ev does not feel that she belongs on Earth, and she struggles to make herself fit into a society that isn't right for her. The Light Between Worlds made my heart ache. I did not expect such a dark and lonesome story, and I am not sure that I enjoyed the sadness written throughout. If I had been more prepared for such a heart wrenching story-line I think that I might have enjoyed it more. TRIGGER WARNINGS for severe depression, self harm and suicide. This book demonstrates the consequences that can occur when someone is trying to please family members rather than focusing on their own mental health. Recommended for fans of Every Heart a Doorway by Seanan McGuire, The Narnia Series by C.S. Lewis and The Magician's Land by Lev Grossman.

Editorial Reviews

“Anyone who knows that feeling of being in love with a fantasy world as a child can understand the longing that Evelyn feels for the Woodlands…. I am so compelled by this story and by these sisters who have lived in another world and must find contentment in our own.”
