Finalist for the International Thriller Writers, Strand Critics, and Barry Award for Best First Novel

"A brave, unflinching heroine and brave, unflinching writing add up to an extraordinary debut--highly recommended."--Lee Child

A dark, compulsively readable psychological suspense debut, the first in a new series featuring the brilliant, fearless, chaotic, and deeply flawed Nora Watts—a character as heartbreakingly troubled, emotionally complex, and irresistibly compelling as Stieg Larsson’s Lisbeth Salander and Jo Nesbø’s Harry Hole.

It begins with a phone call that Nora Watts has dreaded for fifteen years—since the day she gave her newborn daughter up for adoption. Bonnie has vanished. The police consider her a chronic runaway and aren’t looking, leaving her desperate adoptive parents to reach out to her birth mother as a last hope.

A biracial product of the foster system, transient, homeless, scarred by a past filled with pain and violence, Nora knows intimately what happens to vulnerable girls on the streets. Caring despite herself, she sets out to find Bonnie with her only companion, her mutt Whisper, knowing she risks reopening wounds that have never really healed—and plunging into the darkness with little to protect her but her instincts and a freakish ability to detect truth from lies.

The search uncovers a puzzling conspiracy that leads Nora on a harrowing journey of deception and violence, from the gloomy rain-soaked streets of Vancouver, to the icy white mountains of the Canadian interior, to the beautiful and dangerous island where she will face her most terrifying demon. All to save a girl she wishes had never been born.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Having a hard time finishing it I find this a slow read. After a few chapters in, it becomes difficult to get through even a chapter. I find my mind wanders and it doesn't keep my attention very well. As such, I think I miss detail because I started skimming through. I want to know what happens, but the story can't keep my interest long enough to make much progress. Definitely trying to finish the book so I know what happens, but struggling to do so.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from The Lost Ones I wasn't a huge fan of Nora, but I liked the plot and the other characters.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Love Nora as the protagonist Nora is not supposed to be likeable (or at least I don't think) because she does so many unethical things. At the same time she is so fearless, not giving a damn when she works towards a resolution. Therefore, I loved Nora! Lots of twists and turns in the book, though you have to pay close attention when reading because there are so many little details.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Intriguing! The description sounded interesting, but it wasn't until I started to read the first couple of pages when I discovered I was already at Chapter 9 AND STILL in the store. MUST GET - - MUST FINISH. Sheena Kamal brings content pieces in masterfully, leaving the reader trying to figure out their connection when something else happens and spins the web further.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Liked it! A good read. Never got boring. I like how the story takes place where I'm from. The way she decribes vibes from certain places in Vancouver is so spot on. I recommended!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A new anti-heroine to love! I absolutely loved this book! Nora Watts is a complex new anti-heroine, like Lisbeth Salander, but more likeable. Full of action, twists and turns galore, the plot is riveting. Can't wait for the second in this series!

Editorial Reviews

“An intriguing twist on the standard missing-person thriller, Kamal’s debut is raw, violent, and thought provoking. An author to watch!”
