about

A Globe & Mail 100 Selection

The feel-good hit of 2013, The Rosie Project is a classic screwball romance about a handsome but awkward genetics professor and the woman who is totally wrong for him

A first-date dud, socially awkward and overly fond of quick-dry clothes, genetics professor Don Tillman has given up on love, until a chance encounter gives him an idea.

He will design a questionnaire—a sixteen-page, scientifically researched questionnaire—to uncover the perfect partner. She will most definitely not be a barmaid, a smoker, a drinker or a late-arriver. Rosie is all these things. She is also fiery and intelligent, strangely beguiling, and looking for her biological father a search that a DNA expert might just be able to help her with.

The Rosie Project is a romantic comedy like no other. It is arrestingly endearing and entirely unconventional, and it will make you want to drink cocktails.

GRAEME SIMSION is an IT consultant and educator. He wroteThe Rosie Projectas a screenplay before turning it into his first novel. The screenplay won the Australian Writers Guild Inscription Award for Best Romantic Comedy Script in 2010 and then won the 2012 Victorian Premier’s Literary Award for Best Unpublished Manuscript. Reviews

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Cute Based on other reviews of this book I thought it was a laugh out loud kinda story. It's not (at least for me), but it is very enjoyable and I couldn't put this book down. It's a light hearted story of a college professor with a social disability who unexpectedly gets involved and falls in love with his complete opposite.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Love is not a science Don is such a relatable character that anyone can easily feel his struggles and sorrow. Love is complicated and that is what this book tests. Love, as well as how far one can go when one thinks love is intertwined with science.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Okay I thought this book would have been hilarious given the hype about the author's incredible sense of humour shown in this book and although it was not as funny as I hoped, it was an okay book

Rated 5 out of 5 by from relationship drama x10 What do you expect when you don;'t pick up on subtle cues? Or you take everything literally? .... To face drama with every relationship you have. Enter, this book, a great, quirky way to see another persons perspective. I have a deeper sense of respect for anyone who faces the challenges put forth in this book. Clever insight, without having to over analyze things. Read it, then read the second one...it only gets better

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved Dons Character, but... Don's character was amazing. He was different which made him very interesting. I loved the way he thought. Rosie's character, on the other hand, was annoying. That being said, the book was still amazing and interesting.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from The Rosie Project At first I found it hard to get into because the main character reminded me so much of Sheldon from Big Bang. It took me probably 1/3 of the book to stop reading it in Sheldon’s voice. It’s not a book I would read again but I would be open to reading the second book. #plumreview

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love! Loved this book! "Had to" read it for a book club and was expecting something superficial and cheesy, having not heard of it before. Well, I absolutely fell in love with the story and found the characters so relatable. I was laughing out loud almost every five minutes. I promptly purchased and read the Rosie Effect when I was done!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Quick & lovely read I brought this book along for a vacation and it was exactly what I needed to just lay back and relax. It was a quick and lovely read, with very unique characters, but probably not something that will stick with me for a long time.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Unique and probably unlike anything you've ever read before... The main character of this book is lonely. He needs a wife/girlfriend but his robotic approach to life precludes that from happening. He decides to create a system to do just that using logic and science.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from The Rosie Project (Don Tillman #1) by Graeme Simsion I would actually love a follow-up to ‘The Rosie Project’ because when I got to the last page I immediately missed Don Tillman and wanted him back! But whatever Graeme Simsion decides to write next, I’ll be reading because he’s now an automatic-buy author for me.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Cute book! I received this book as a birthday gift. As it's not a book I had heard of prior to this, I'm unsure whether I would have picked this up for myself. But I'm so happy that it found its way to me. This is such a feel-good, cute and funny story. The awkward moments and explorations of logic surrounding human behaviour and romance were really enjoyable to read. A great easy summer read. #plumreview

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Feel-good Read! This was such a Feel-Good book! Funny, quirky but still an adorable plot that was fun to follow. Fell in love with the main character, Don. Recommend!
Date published: 2017-05-25
Rated 4 out of 5 by from A quick and easy read The main character of this book is very similar to Sheldon from The Big Bang Theory. His lack of social skills and inappropriate quirks made me laugh multiple times when reading this book. At first his writing style was a bit heavy to read but it felt like this got better as I read on. Loved that the chapters of this book were so short (sometimes only 4-6 pages). It made it very easy to quickly read a chapter between tasks and interruptions.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good Quick Read This book was just okay for me. It was sweet, funny, well-written and lighthearted, but somehow it felt that it was lacking something, and at times it was even a little bit boring. Perhaps because it was the first novel from Graeme Simsion, a successful business man. In that case I think it was very good. Overall it's a good quick read. A little lightness in between heavier novels perhaps.
Date published: 2017-03-28
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Hilarious and cute The book is written from Don's perspective and with all the quirks his character has, it was a hilarious read. Overall it was also a cute story.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A literal LOL type of book I must have picked this book up 3 or 4 times and would start it and then forget about it. When I finally had nothing else to read but this I was kicking myself for ever putting it down. There were moments when I would literally laugh out loud because of the things Don would do or say, I would shake my head or roll my eyes because of Gene, I would image myself as the charismatic Rosie. This is a fun book, and a really lighthearted tale. Loved every single minute of it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A coming of age story…of a 39 year old man. The Rosie Project is one of those feel good books you shouldn’t miss. It’s full of wonderful characters and laughs from beginning to end. You won’t be always be wondering what will happen next, but you’ll always be wondering what Don will do next. It’s a light-hearted read that attempts to tackle important themes at the same time. It’s ironic that a character that lacks empathy reminds us to emphasize with others and see their point of view before passing judgment. Don is definitely a character for the ages and The Rosie Project is one of the best romantic comedies you’ll find.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Unique and lovable! This was an original story with a common and relatable topic but introduced in an original and unique way both with the plot and the character of Don. It was very touching and quite relatable in many ways and the pacing of the overall story and timing of events was perfectly carried out. I loved the journey through Don's eyes and seeing his character development and growth. The common issues with human interaction and social norms, social errors, and other related topics were explored very uniquely in this book. This book was also humorous in many ways and Don was adorable and a very heartwarming character. I love him and Rosie together.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from EXCEPTIONAL I am a huge critic of books, and I have a hard time getting into books that are written poorly or are missing a spark. This story was perfection. I love Don and his quirks and I think he is an incredible human being who showed growth and made sacrifices. The story is written eloquently and does not miss a beat. I fell in love with Rosie and you will too! :)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful To be honest... I don't love reading, but this book was really entertaining, funny and easy to read (English is not my first language). The only reason I had to take a break from reading it, was because I had to study for finals. It usually takes me (at least) 2-3 months to read a book, but I finished this book in only 2 weeks. I'm really excited to read the second book!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I laughed out loud i've read some of the other reviews - boring flat characters, predictable plot - yes it has all those things. This is a 'rom com' of books BUT I still enjoyed it. Don't pick up this book as a 'serious' read - its lighthearted, and yes it's written from a unique perspective. This 'Sheldon Cooper' type is socially awkward, but the author uses this to work in some pretty funny moments in the book. So a life changing epic, it is not, but I did laugh out loud reading it. Great vacation read!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Romantic fluff, with annoying guy The main character in this novel is so annoying that it was painful to read. It seems like a very unlikely romance, that would never happen in real life.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A delightful read This is well written and an easy read. Delightfully original romantic plot that at times is so funny you will laugh out loud. I have recommended to all my friends as well as one complete stranger on the beach.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Found It Disappointing I didn't love the story, and I found there were some holes in the plot that didn't seem to connect. I just wasn't intrigued by this book like I had hoped I would be. I didn't think it was bad, I just didnt't think it was good. You're better off reading the Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time if you're interested in the Autism component of the story.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The rosie project This is a wonderful, funny, heart warming story. I have a grandson with autism spectrum. I hope he grows up to be as quirky, adventurous and, yes, compassionate (in his own way) as Don. I look forward to The Rosie Effect.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A fun, and very interesting, look at ASD The Rosie Project was an entertaining and fun look at relationships through the eyes of an individual who lives with an ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder). While providing some funny insights into how the mind might work for a person with Aspergers Syndrome, it also highlighted the high functionality often associated with these individuals. But, more importantly, as the story developed you more and more found yourself relating to the character simply because he was just one more normal person trying his best to maneuver the incomprehensible path of human relationships. Well worth the read.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Needs to be read I could not put this story down. It is told in Don's voice only, but he is so anal that you do not need anyone else's voice telling the story. I was skeptical at first, but after the first chapter, I was hooked.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Too cute very light hearted This book is lovely. It is truly too cute. Don is quirky, and you start to understand his way of thinking. This book made me giggle and smile through and through. Some reviews are saying that it is making a joke and exploiting autism or asperges, on the contrary, this light hearted novel plays in understanding the different ways people function. Don is highly functioning in his disability, and you will fall in love with his character. This was a great read, I finished it quite quickly :) Very pleased

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Don will make you laugh out loud I don't normally read fiction novels but I'm so happy that I picked up this book because I absolutely loved it. It was hilarious. There were so many moments that made me laugh out loud. If you're a fan of romantic, feel good comedies this book is for you! Don Tillman is a socially awkward genetics professor who is approaching his 40th birthday and decides it's time for him to find a suitable partner. This results in the creation of the Wife Project which is essentially a questionnaire to help Don find his perfect mate. Don's first few attempts to find his match do not go as planned and enlists the help of Gene, his best friend and colleague. In comes Rosie Jarman. Rosie is a non-punctual, smoker, who enjoys a drink or two. Three things which make her an unsuitable match according to the Wife Project. As Don gets to know Rosie he becomes enthralled in her quest to find her biological father. This leads to the birth of the Father Project. As the story continues Don and Rosie's relationship blossom. Do they end up together? You'll have to read it and find out for yourself.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from don't enjoy this style This has been a very popular book, but I'm going to be one of the few who did not enjoy it. I don't like "chick lit" or first person stories. I realize that there exist a few people who are actually like the main character, so it's enlightening to learn about them. I give author credit for giving us someone different - out of the norm - but still, I read it in chunks.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Laugh out loud funny but touching as well My son has ASD, I found parts of the book very funny for things I could see or hear him doing, there were sad and touching parts as well because having ASD can be a lonely existence. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fell in love with this book! Written from the perspective of an individual with asperger's trying to find his love match - I found this book to be incredibly witty and fun. I could not put this book down, and read it from front to back in a couple of days. I leant it to my mother who read the book in one day - it is certainly an easy read. We have since bought the Rosie Effect because we could not get enough!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Cute story and a light read I enjoyed this book. It was the perfect companion for my commute to and from work. I found that the characters were likeable enough and I liked the fact that Don seems to be oblivious to the similarities that he has with patients who live with Asperger's Syndrome. It was humorous and endearing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of my favorites! I read the reviews on this book, and after contemplating it for a couple of days I bought the book. I will never regret this purchase! The first couple of pages are a little difficult to read through, but it's worth it. I absolutely loved this book, and guarantee you will too! It's lighthearted, funny, touching, and easy to read. The author keeps you questioning the outcome from the beginning. You will love this book, I promise!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Rosie Project - A Great Read This is one of the most enjoyable books I have read in a while. I laughed out loud almost every time I picked it up to read. I loved the writer's style and he really captured the personalities of his characters. It was hard to put down, yet I really didn't want it to end. My husband read it after I did and he too found it a fun read. I have since passed it on to my daughter-in-law and have recommended it to a number of friends in the past few weeks. Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not worth all the hype I am really surprised this book was rated so highly. I found it difficult at times to get though and I had to force myself to keep reading to finish the book. The characters are quirky and funny. It is a light read but not one that I would recommend. The plot sounds great at the service, but at the end of the day, this book just did not deliver.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from The Rosie Project Two things: First, the character is not Sheldon Cooper from The Big Bang Theory, but he will remind you of him at times; second, this book is meant to entertain and enlighten, but not to change the world. How you respond to those two facts dictates how you will respond to this book.  Some find the main character's resemblance to Sheldon charming and engaging. Others roll their eyes and dismiss the book because of the similarity. Some readers settle into this book with a light heart that allows them to enjoy the story for the pleasant romp that it is. Others pick it up with the expectation that the challenges faced by those with Asperger syndrome should be dutifully and seriously addressed. These readers rail against every perceived cliché and misrepresented fact. I settled into this book with a light heart. I found Don Tillman's resemblance to Sheldon charming and engaging.  I don't see The Rosie Project as a textbook examination of Asperger syndrome. I don't think a novel should have to bear that awesome responsibility. Does it raise awareness of the prevalence of Asperger syndrome in society? Yes. Will it encourage people to be more understanding of people who navigate society differently from most? Yes. Does it entertain and enlighten? Yes. That's good enough for me.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Light and funny read Oh the struggles of Don Tillman, a genetics has struggled his whole life from being different. He can't socialize or love day by day like a "normal" person. Tillman goes by a strict daily routine and if anything throws off his daily schedule, he quickly tries to adjust it to get back on track. For example: Don will cut the time of his work out so everything for the day is back on track.  But his life gets taken off course and eventually struggles to keep any of his routine when he meets Rosie. Don believes Rosie is going on a date with him because of the "Wife Project", which is a questionnaire Don created to find a potential female partner.  Don finds himself in situations he would never find himself in if it wasn't for Rosie. Rosie exposes Don to a different life all while both trying to find who's Rosie's biological father is.  This book is all about friendships, love difficulties and humor all in one book. It's a funny, easy read and I definitely suggest The Rosie Project as your next read.

Editorial Reviews

“Although there are many laughs to be found in this marvelous novel, The Rosie Project is a serious reflection on our need for companionship and identity. Don Tillman is as awkward and confusing a narrator as he is lovable and charming.”
