about

The youngest daughter of a proud Celtic king, Fallon has always lived in the shadow of her older sister Sorcha’s legendary reputation as a warrior. But when Fallon was a young child, the armies of Julius Caesar invaded the island of Britain and her beloved sister was killed in battle.

On the eve of her seventeenth birthday, Fallon is excited to follow in Sorcha’s footsteps and earn her rightful place in her father’s royal war band. But she never gets the chance. Instead, Fallon is captured by a group of ruthless brigands that sells her to an exclusive training school for female gladiators—and its most influential patron is none other than Julius Caesar himself. In a cruel twist of fate, Fallon’s worst enemy, the man who destroyed her family, might be her only hope of survival.

Now, Fallon must overcome vicious rivalries, chilling threats and the dangerous attention of Caesar himself to survive the deadly fights that take place both in and out of the arena—and to claim her place in history among the Valiant.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Epic read I love this book. There was twists and turns in the story that I did not expect. I would definitely re-read this book.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from What gladiators? I was very disappointed with this book. I was expecting badass female gladiators with lots of battle and intense scenes and a nice side plot of revenge but what I got was very boring fight scenes and a female protagonist who really needed to show me more enthusiasm. Plus, there was no revenge plot at all which would have made this book so much better. Oh well, better luck next time.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good. Female gladiators is what drew me to this book because wow, that is so bad ass! The Valiant then goes further by exploring a bunch of other topics like family, honour, freedom, and politics. The beginning was a little slow and I wasn't super invested in the romance, but it was really sweet and I enjoyed that that wasn't the central focus - not when kick ass ladies have asses to kick.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from The Valiant I love Roman gladiator history, I just wasn't pleased with her decision at the end

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved It I love how the author took history and tweaked it a little to make the story more unique. Storyline was great, and it had lots of twists and turns to keep you guessing. Can’t wait for the next book.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome! Fallon is such a strong main character, fighting for herself, fighting for what she stands for. All the different characters meshed so well together. And of course, being a fast paced story, it just keeps on making you want more! Looking forward to seeing how this series develops.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Epic, Heartfelt, and Awesome! Holy hell, this book was AWESOME. Seriously, I expected it to be good, but it totally blew my mind. I'll admit it––there are some definite comparisons to this book and the film Gladiator we all know and love, but honestly, those were afterthoughts for me. I was completely immersed right from the start by the historic world-building and enthralling characters. Fallon is without question one of my favourite female heroes in YA fiction. She has her flaws, yes, but more than that, she's strong, smart, brave, determined and crushingly honourable. Speaking of crushes, Caius is another favourite character I hope to be seeing more of in the future. While most of the questions and plot holes were wrapped up, there is definitely room for a sequel, and that can't come fast enough. I loved the action, the story, the suspense, the romance, the twists I didn't see coming (and even the ones I did). I cannot recommend this book highly enough. It was utterly fantastic and is just what any YA fan needs on their shelf. Seriously, you can't go wrong with feisty female gladiators!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Gladiators!! *I received an advanced reader copy of this book from Indigo Books & Music Inc. in exchange for an honest review* + HarperCollins Canada* I'm completely in love with this book! Need more immediately! The Valiant was captivating and I wish that the story never ended. Fallon is a strong female character, a badass and she stands out. Lesley definitely did her research when she was creating this book. I'm already looking forward to hopefully more in the series. Everyone needs to pre-order this book immediately! If you love history and gladiators then this is the perfect book. Lesley's writing style is amazing as she lets you follow Fallon on this journey from warrior princess to gladiator. The Valiant is also action-packed and has some romance.I loved all the characters! I felt like I was being pulled back into history in the Roman Era. Definitely brutal world that all the gladiators lived in to survive. As a person who loves to read about history, The Valiant hit it out of the ball park! Fallon is the youngest daughter of the Celtic King. After her sister Sorcha died defending their land from Julius Ceasar. She is on fierce character who is strong and spirited. Then she is thrown into the hands of slavers who then sell her to a training school for gladiatrix's own by the one and only Julius Caesar. The story is one you will love in seconds, action, brutal battles and the relationships she creates that become her family (Elka). There are twists and I didn't expect some of them but it made the story better. While there was a romance it doesn't play a huge role in the book. I already can't wait to read the sequel!! It did take me a while to read due to circumstances but I would've flown through this book in a day or two! The Valiant is a must read!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A Vivid Introduction! The Valiant is a new novel in the Young Adult Fantasy genre by Lesley Livingston, set to release on February 14th, 2017. I was lucky enough to receive an Advanced Reader Copy (from Harper Collins Canada, in exchange for an honest review), and with my head full of promises about female gladiators and deadly conflict, I dove right in! And despite some minor flaws in the writing style/plot pacing, The Valiant certainly lived up to my expectations! The Valiant promised strong female characters, a fast-paced plot and plenty of brutal action, and Livingston delivered on all three. There was certainly no shortage of action, mostly perpetuated by the plethora of female characters, both good and bad. And still, Livingston managed to develop some memorable characters in between all the action and brutality. While Fallon was built into a strong female lead, with memorable motivations and relatable struggles, the secondary characters in The Valiant were not very well-rounded, and could have definitely benefited from more attention. What development they did undergo was mainly through direct revelations as the characters revealed truths to Fallon, and this often felt a bit hand-fisted. However, despite the lack of development to secondary characters, should the reader focus on Fallon herself, there is certainly something to be said for Livingston's attention to detail and prowess when it comes to building a strong protagonist. The story itself was relatively straight-forward. Livingston crafted a simplistic adventure/coming of age story set in Ancient Rome. Her use of gender-reversal (when it came to the gladiatrices) added a unique element to the story. Furthermore, there was one highly notable plot twist I did not see coming, and I thoroughly enjoyed the direction in which it took the plot. The majority of this novel was marvellously well-written, with a solid tone and engaging dialogue. However, on occasion, Livingston lapsed into an almost juvenile writing style, which completely removed me from the plot. The shifts from a serious tone to a more ridiculous, aloof tone, even in moments of tension, were off-putting. Thankfully, these lapses were few and far between. Overall, The Valiant was a brilliant introduction into a vivid new world created by Lesley Livingston. Despite some minor issues, The Valiant delivers action, romance, and strong female characters, in addition to a breath-taking interpretation of Ancient Rome, a host of intriguing secondary characters and an interesting dynamic when it comes to the portraying of female relationships. So if you're looking for a book to add to your 2017 TBR, make sure you don't miss out on The Valiant by Lesley Livingston! (4/5)
