about

Based on supermodel Georgie Badiel’s childhood, a young girl dreams of bringing clean drinking water to her African village

With its wide sky and warm earth, Princess Gie Gie’s kingdom is a beautiful land. But clean drinking water is scarce in her small African village. And try as she might, Gie Gie cannot bring the water closer; she cannot make it run clearer. Every morning, she rises before the sun to make the long journey to the well. Instead of a crown, she wears a heavy pot on her head to collect the water. After the voyage home, after boiling the water to drink and clean with, Gie Gie thinks of the trip that tomorrow will bring. And she dreams. She dreams of a day when her village will have cool, crystal-clear water of its own.

Inspired by the childhood of African–born model Georgie Badiel, acclaimed author Susan Verde and award-winning author/illustrator Peter H. Reynolds have come together to tell this moving story. As a child in Burkina Faso, Georgie and the other girls in her village had to walk for miles each day to collect water. This vibrant, engaging picture book sheds light on this struggle that continues all over the world today, instilling hope for a future when all children will have access to clean drinking water.

Susan Verde grew up in a brownstone in the heart of Greenwich Village. She spent much of her time as a child clad in bell bottoms and rainbow suspenders, roller skating up and down her block with a skate key around her neck and a piece of chalk in her pocket (for spontaneous hopscotch). Susan's love of literature began in utero (accord...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from one person's influence can make a difference Based on the childhood experiences of Georgie Badiel. A little girl and her mother wake up early every morning and begin their very long walk to a well shared by many other women. There they fill water jugs, briefly visit with their friends around the well, then begin the long walk home carrying the heavy water-filled jugs. Upon getting home late in the day they use the water for drinking, cooking, bathing. The little girl dreams of having clean water in her own village, but every day is the same. This is a beautifully told and magnificently illustrated story about the difficult life of millions of people who do not have easy access to clean running water. So many women and girls walk miles each day to obtain water, and carry it back to their village for their family's use. The need is great. This story is inspired by the childhood of a now high-fashion model, Georgie Badiel, from Burkina Faso. She is now working to provide wells of clean drinking water for the people of Burkina Faso.
