about

Can a robot survive in the wilderness?

When robot Roz opens her eyes for the first time, she discovers that she is alone on a remote, wild island. She has no idea how she got there or what her purpose is--but she knows she needs to survive. After battling a fierce storm and escaping a vicious bear attack, she realizes that her only hope for survival is to adapt to her surroundings and learn from the island's unwelcoming animal inhabitants.

As Roz slowly befriends the animals, the island starts to feel like home--until, one day, the robot's mysterious past comes back to haunt her.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My son cried! My children's school did this as their One School One Book program this year. It was so much fun to read this with my boys (5 and 7) and they really enjoyed it. We had fun using different voices for the unique characters, we laughed, we got scared and at the end of the book my 5 year old even cried he was so invested in the characters. They can't wait for a sequel as they need to know what the future holds for Roz, and so do I!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Wild Robot I read this book to a WILD group of SKs. They were silent for the 45 minutes I read it to them every day. The story is enchanting and really invites kids to think about empathy, friendships, and inclusion. We had wonderful, engaged conversations. It is a great read aloud for 5-7 year olds. Many parts were scary and there are guns. The book was written like there may be a sequel.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of our best reads of the year I read this book to my 6 year old daughter who loves animals and my 3 year old son who loves robots. It was a perfect book for both, lots of action, compassion, loyalty, and adventure. Very well written and poignant for both the kids and myself. The illustrations too are beautiful. My son has asked me every week since we finished it three months ago when will we get "The Wild Robot Returns". My hope is that there is indeed a second book in the works!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Read in 1 Week by 11 Yr. Old My son who would prefer graphic novels chose this book as a compromise (or bribe) to me buying him a graphic novel of his choice. He started this novel on a Sunday night and continued an hour a day until he was done the following Sunday. He loved this book with its mixture of technology and animals. When we returned to get a new book, he looked specifically for this author.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Charming book about relationships This is a beautiful book, both in terms of illustrations and layout, but in terms of message. It features a robot who starts the story knowing nothing but learns to care for others, to make friends and to grow. It has important messages about family, friendship and the environment that are both important and touching. It is definitely intended for younger readers and would make a good stepping stone between the beginning chapter books and full length novels.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Beautiful Pictures Beautiful illustrations, but for me the story was just too simple. Yes this is intended for younger readers but I still felt that the writing was lacking.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great read for young children! A heartwarming tale about a Robot who finds herself stranded on an island that is uninhabited by humans. This robot, named Roz, learns how to survive, make friends and become a loving mother. I believe that this book could actually be read by younger readers (than the target audience) because of the simple language, short chapters and vivid pictures that work to engage interest. The structure of this book would make it an excellent fit for reading out loud in classrooms because of the short chapter lengths. The illustrations are beautifully done (from what was included in the ARC). There are many important lessons included that are relevant to young readers, such as: family ties, community, friendship, kindness, climate change and disability. Warning there is some death included.
