about

We don’t need to be instructed to eat apples instead of potato chips. What we need is someone to inspire us to eat well and to show us just how powerful eating that apple can be. This person must be a trusted voice, one that can calm the informational clutter instead of adding yet another discordant voice to the pile.

Desiree Nielsen is a registered dietitian, one of the public’s most trusted sources of nutrition information. In Un-Junk Your Diet, she teaches readers about anti-inflammatory dieting in a way that’s engaging, funny, and approachable.

This book begins with a call to action to help shake up perceptions of what food means to our bodies and illuminate all the ways that marketers co-opt healthy eating messages to coerce us into choosing food that is unworthy. In addition, an in-depth look at the fundamentals of nutrition—with a splash of myth busting—strengthens readers’ abilities to resist the latest nutrition headline and continue making healthier choices.

Because there is no one right way for every individual eater, Nielsen offers a brief exercise in self-discovery before providing four distinct plans for becoming healthier. They range from the gentle and gradual to the two-week kick start that appeals to both detox seekers and vacation slimmers.
Desiree Nielsen is a registered dietitian who spends her days motivating others to live their most vibrant lives with the power of whole foods. She is a speaker, media spokesperson, creator of desireerd.com, and owner of a successful private practice in beautiful Vancouver, Canada. Desiree enjoys living the anti-inflammatory life with ...

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great read! This is a great read and filled with tons of helpful advice for advancing one's health through diet. I do wish there was a greater emphasis on the recipes with pictures and perhaps more options to go through. I'd also have enjoyed a plant based meal plan to go alongside the omnivore one for variety and choice.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great read! This book has two halves: the first chock full of nutritional information to reimagine your eating plan and give new insights into what the food does in your body. The second half is full of recipes to broaden your horizons. I love the tofu sticks!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Too simple and common sense, but liked the second half of the book. I was really excited to get this book so when I ordered it, I paid extra for rush delivery. I thought I'd read this in bed but was a lil disappointed because all the pages are matte which makes the book a bit more heavier. I also thought the author would explain inflammation right away but she didn't, not until like chapter 5. A lot of the information in the first few chapters are things someone should already know. I got bored and skipped many paragraphs. I felt like my attention shifted quickly from one thing to another and was too broad thus felt like I was all over the place. This book is great for people who don't know much about nutrition and the negative effects of an inflammatory diet. I like to dig deep down to the cellular part when I read about health and nutrition so typically I read scientific articles because they really explain exactly what goes on in a cell. I have read other books on something else and got more information on inflammation than I did with this book. There are some important points she missed to include, such as taking antibiotics kills both the good and bad bacteria which can cause chronic inflammation if not taken with probiotics or the fact that inflammation in the gut leads to inflammation to the brain which is tied to ADHD, etc. However, I do like the self quizzes, lists of food, meal plan, and recipes (though I am a visual person I would have liked to see photos of all recipes).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So helpful, I bought 2 more to share with family and friends. This book helps you understand the 'why' behind the 'how' in such a simple, straightforward, and humorous way that it's easy to apply in day to day life. The kick-start eating plan even came with the recipes and grocery list to make the first steps easy, and more importantly sustainable. I love, love, LOVE, this book!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My Food Bible So a coworker recommended that I check out this book and I showed up to the book launch mainly for support, but when I bought it and started reading it I got hooked! I consider myself to be a fairly healthy person but this book showed me what it means to be truly healthy! I learned so much from it and it got really exciting when it talked about the food swaps and the recipes! I'm a sweet tooth and the recipe for black bean brownies was so delicious! Definitely a great value for such an insightful book!
