An eighteen-year-old chieftain's daughter must find a way to kill her village's oppressive deity if she ever wants to return home in Warrior of the Wild, the Viking-inspired YA standalone fantasy from Tricia Levenseller, author of Daughter of the Pirate King.

How do you kill a god?

As her father's chosen heir, eighteen-year-old Rasmira has trained her whole life to become a warrior and lead her village. But when her coming-of-age trial is sabotaged and she fails the test, her father banishes her to the monster-filled wilderness with an impossible quest: To win back her honor, she must kill the oppressive god who claims tribute from the villages each year or die trying.

Tricia Levenseller, author of Daughter of the Pirate King and its sequel Daughter of the Siren Queen, is from a small town in Oregon, but she now lives next to the Rocky Mountains in Utah with her bossy dog, Rosy. She received her degree in English language and editing, and she is thrilled that she never has to read a textbook again. W...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful and Filled with Danger *I received a copy of this title from the publisher in exchange for an honest review* Well, I definitely devoured this epic viking fantasy! It was filled with all the things I wanted and needed from this book and more. After reading Tricia’s other books, I had to give this one a shot, especially considering I’m now a die-hard viking fan thanks to Sky in the Deep! In a nutshell, this is about a girl fighting for power in a world dominated by men. With no male heir, Rasmira’s father chooses her as the future leader of their people. She’s the only female warrior and she has to fight harder than the others to prove herself not only to her father, but to the people she is going to someday lead. After being sabotaged during her coming-of-age trial, her father has no choice but to banish her to the wild. Every banished person has a chance to regain their honour if they can complete an impossible task. Rasmira’s task is to kill the god who has been terrorizing the villages and demanding payment every year. Rasmira is a feisty, headstrong protagonist. She runs headfirst into danger at every chance she gets and refuses help even when she needs it. Her life has never been easy and she has never had anyone to turn to. She’s forced to learn how to survive in a world outside her village all alone and she finds so much more than she thought she ever would in the wild. The level of danger in this book is insane. There are so many crazy monsters and creatures in the wild. Death is literally around every corner. I loved the world so much because it was so atmospheric! Tricia Levenseller knows how to write a great adventure and I love that this story involves a quest with a ton of personal growth for characters. There are so many great characters in this story and I loved that this was a standalone. I’d say it’s kind of between The Boneless Mercies and Sky in the Deep. Warrior of the Wild is such a fiercely feminine story about survival, love, family, and friendship. There’s also a very satisfying twist in there as well. I highly recommend this one if you’re looking for the next great viking fantasy!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from #HowDoYouKillAGod?
Rasmira, the youngest of six daughters, has been training to be a fierce warrior. In her village, women are healers, jewel makers, and wives. But as the only daughter who is talented in the arts of a warrior, Rasmira must face the Warrior Trial to become worthy of someday taking her father’s place and lead the people of her village. And she’s ready. Or so she thought.
As the entire village watches on, the Trial ensues and Rasmira is betrayed and ultimately fails the Trial. The Trial ends in disgrace and disgust at the will of her father and the elders and results in her ultimate banishment from the village. To have the hope of someday returning home, Rasmira must complete an epic quest in the Wilds surrounding her home or she will be doomed to live in the Wild forever and never see her family again.
Tricia Levenseller weaves a tale fraught with deadly wild beasts and an all-powerful, evil, vengeful and demanding God. The world Tricia has created shows no mercy and to survive the Wilds and complete the quest, Rasmira must brave and conquer it all...and maybe learn a thing or two along the way.
This epic tale is fast-paced, sometimes beautifully gory and action-packed! The reluctant, slow burn romance and bonding of the characters is well-timed and believable. The emergence of a stronger cast of characters as they learn how to battle to survive is just perfect. The overall theme of the story rings true and I highly recommend reading it as soon as it hits shelves on February 26, 2019!
