From the author of the beloved New York Times bestselling book Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? and the creator and star of The Mindy Project comes a collection of essays that are as hilarious and insightful as they are deeply personal.
In Why Not Me?, Kaling shares her ongoing journey to find contentment and excitement in her adult life, whether it’s falling in love at work, seeking new friendships in lonely places, attempting to be the first person in history to lose weight without any behavior modification whatsoever, or most important, believing that you have a place in Hollywood when you’re constantly reminded that no one looks like you.
In “How to Look Spectacular: A Starlet’s Confessions,” Kaling gives her tongue-in-cheek secrets for surefire on-camera beauty, (“Your natural hair color may be appropriate for your skin tone, but this isn’t the land of appropriate–this is Hollywood, baby. Out here, a dark-skinned woman’s traditional hair color is honey blonde.”) “Player” tells the story of Kaling being seduced and dumped by a female friend in L.A. (“I had been replaced by a younger model. And now they had matching bangs.”) In “Unlikely Leading Lady,” she muses on America’s fixation with the weight of actresses, (“Most women we see onscreen are either so thin that they’re walking clavicles or so huge that their only scenes involve them breaking furniture.”) And in “Soup Snakes,” Kaling spills some secrets on her relationship with her ex-boyfriend and close friend, B.J. Novak (“I will freely admit: my relationship with B.J. Novak is weird as hell.”)
Mindy turns the anxieties, the glamour, and the celebrations of her second coming-of-age into a laugh-out-loud funny collection of essays that anyone who’s ever been at a turning point in their life or career can relate to. And those who’ve never been at a turning point can skip to the parts where she talks about meeting Bradley Cooper.
MINDY KALING lives in rural New Hampshire and does not own a TV.

Date published: 2017-10-03
Rated 5 out of 5 by from More emotional and insightful than her first book Mindy Kaling shares a bit more about her life and how she’s grown since writing her last book. She never ceases to make you laugh, but there were a couple of times that I was near tears, especially when she talks about the death of her mother. My favourite chapters were “Soup Snakes” about her friendship with B.J. Novak and “A Perfect Courtship in My Alternate Life”, a short story told through emails. There is even some good advice for young girls sprinkled throughout. Also the inside cover is like a white wallpaper with gold hamburgers, smartphones, lipstick, stars, and birds, which I think pretty much sums up her personality.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great follow up to her first book. Recommend audiobook version I loved her first book so much, so I was really excited when her second book came out. While it was still really funny, it just didn't click with me as easily as her first book, and I felt a couple of parts dragged just a tiny bit, and a bit more edgier/harsher in parts. It's still an excellent, lighthearted read though, and as I recommended with her first book, be sure to listen to the audiobook for the best delivery of Mindy's jokes and stories in true Mindy Kaling fashion.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from First Audiobook I finished I recently took a job where on Fridays I do a lot of mindless tasks, folding and cutting paper, stuffing envelopes. I really wanted to get into audiobooks to have some intellectual stimulation during this dull time. First I tried fiction. I love fiction, particularly bestsellers/Heather's picks. If something is popular I want to know why and I usually enjoy it. But I could never follow the stories and I felt like I missed things. Often narrators were unengaging. So non-fiction seemed up my alley. I tried some clean-up, become-successful, take-charge-of-your-life type books and was generally disappointed. It was all very dull and I actually found it annoying to the point I turned them off. Admittedly that genre has never been my preference. After some research I came across several people claiming that audiobooks were all about who was reading them, and Amy Poeler's book was suggested as a book with an engaging narrator. I liked Amy's book very much, though I kind of drifted in and out it was overall engaging and fun. Unfortunately I had to return it to my elibrary before I finished and there was a waitlist to take it out again. So I tried Mindy's book. I liked Mindy on The Office and The Mindy Project, but only in small doses. She can be brash, but I have a lot of respect for that unapologetic brashness. I was interested in what she'd have to say. This book was a DELIGHT. Mindy is so engaging. It's like going to a party where one person has all the best stories and is telling them freely. Mindy is funny, entertaining, and occasionally insightful. I have certain acquaintances who I am not close friends with for the primary reason that they seem like a lot of work. They are constantly firing on all cylinders and things just seems to happen to them. Often they are wrong, rude, or upset about something trivial. But they have the best anecdotes and I love to seem them at parties. Mindy's book reminds me of time spent with those people and I love it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Entertaining Another thoroughly entertaining read from Mindy Kalig. I enjoy her humour and her anecdotes about her shows, The Office and The Mindy Project. I could have done without the excessively long chapter with the e-mail/text exchanges, but overall I was amused from start to finish.
Date published: 2017-06-08

Rated 3 out of 5 by from I really wanted to love this book I really like the Mindy Project and so I thought I would love her books but what it has made me realize is that although I love fluff in my tv shows when I am reading a book I want more from it, either more of a story or just more depth. I liked this one better than her first book but still as much as I wanted to I just don't really love her books.
Date published: 2017-04-19
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Hilarious I don't usually read non fiction books, unless it's a requirement for class, but I actually ended up loving this book! I've always liked Mindy and her writing is humourous. I caught myself laughing out loud multiple times.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from It's Okay! I'm honestly not a huge fan of The Mindy Project, but I loved Mindy on The Office so I had to check this out! I love how down to earth she is and I absolutely adore her personality, but I wasn't always 100% invested in what she was telling us. If you're a huge Mindy fan, definitely check this out!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Pretty much what I expected It was okay. I think I managed a few laughs. The first one felt fresher and more engaging to me. This book (which I think of as the B side) is perfectly fine - no complaints, but no excitement either. If you're into the first book, it's probably worth checking out.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Whats not to love, if you love Mindy! So obviously, don't read this if you don't adore Mindy Kaling. Considering this book is Mindy through and through, I literally read this book with her voice in my head. She's relatable and hilarious, incredibly talented and hard working. I really look up to her dedication, and though this book was a knock out read, it was also very inspirational as a woman. I literally felt like I had inside jokes with her, obviously I didn't considering I was in small town Alberta, staying in to read her book on a Friday night in sweats. But I know she appreciates that kind of woman. Anyway, I loved this book, even more then her first.

Date published: 2017-03-08
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Light Reading I have a love/hate relationship with Mindy Kaling....I think she's funny and part of me wants to be her friend...and the other part of me is like 'ya I get it, you weren't cute when you were little and grew up to be a successful writer'. Nothing about this book is too outside the box - it's exactly what you expect it to be.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Enjoyed the book but... I enjoyed Mindy's first book much more. I found her much more relate-able in that one. This one has more recent stories about her life in the entertainment industry, which are still interesting but loses some of the "real girl" charm she had, Still enjoyed the stories and still had some good laughs throughout. Would definitely still recommend it.

Date published: 2017-01-12
Rated 2 out of 5 by from May be a minority here.. I fell in love with Mindy on "The Mindy Project" however, I do not find her books that great. They are very braggy..and less funny (than the show). Personally, her on-screen character makes me laugh a lot more, so her books fell short. With that being said, I would probably still read a third book if she were to write one lol. I would recommend both her books with a disclaimer - if you're looking for "Mindy Lahiri" she's not in this book.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better than her first book If you were on the fence about her first book - I'd recommend picking this one up instead. The essays were more relatable and strong - and contained everything that I love about Mindy Kaling. So funny!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Funny and quick read First off, let me just say, I'm pretty sure Mindy Kaling is my soul doppelgänger. Except I am not Indian or even remotely famous. I was excited to read this second book after loving her first book, 'Is everyone hanging out without me?'. Her writing is hysterical and for someone in the entertainment industry, I find her surprisingly easy to relate to. As well, especially notable in this book, it's evident that she has worked hard for her success. This book was a quick, enjoyable, read and I can only hope that Mindy Kaling decides to publish more. I'm going to be honest and say that I did enjoy her first book more because I found it funnier but with that being said, this novel was also extremely funny and did have a couple laugh out loud moments.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from The New Girl Next Door I typically don't love celebrity books - but this is different because Mindy is actually a writer. She makes it seem like she is the girl next door, but who is living in hollywood. Great read - especially on vacation!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good read An excellent follow-up to her first book. I wasn't sure what to expect because her last book was not published that long ago but Kaling had hilarious stories and tidbits about her life in this one. Well worth the read if you like her style of comedy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Inspirational and Highly Enjoyable The writing style is very similar to her first book; Mindy Kaling makes her readers feel as though they are simply out for coffee with an old friend. This book is filled with stories of the quirks that come with a television job where you are constantly surrounded by talented people (not to mention insider perks such as how it feels to kiss Seth Rogen). Mindy describes all the ups and downs of her current Hollywood life, but her style remains down to earth and loveably sweet.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Mindy's book While I love how her style has changed since her last book, her humour does not remain unprecedented. In some ways, she had similar ideas to Fey's "Bossypants"..., with perhaps a cultural twist added. Still, I enjoy her views and her stories. She is terribly relatable, especially to someone like me.

Read from the Book

One evening last year, I was onstage at a Q&A in Manhattan hosted by a magazine to discuss my life and career. This was one of those fancy events where ticket prices are high, and there’s wine and cheese beforehand, and cocktails, but no real meal is served at any point. It made you wish you had just shushed the naysayers and brought three hot little sliders in your clutch to nibble at opportune moments. No one else seemed to mind the lack of food, though, because the theater was packed, primarily with an older, mostly white crowd.I was very tired. I had filmed a full week on the show, traveled on a red-eye from Los Angeles, done press all day, and arrived at the theater. It would be the last hurdle before I could go back to my hotel, take off my pants, and eat a room-service club sandwich while I watched syndicated reruns of The Big Bang Theory. Sheldon’s sweetbazinga! would lull me to sleep, as is always my preference. At the end of the interview, the moderator opened the floor to the audience. I noticed that the small group of people who lined up to ask me questions looked very different from the majority of the crowd. They were mostly young women of color. After a few people went, a young Indian girl stepped forward to take the microphone. She looked about fifteen, and not only out of place in that crowd but also a little young to be asking a question in front of such a big audience. I think she felt it, too, because I could see from the stage that she was shaking. After a moment of nervous silence, she asked, “Mindy, where do you get your confidence? Because I feel like I used to have it when I was younger but now I don’t.”Context is so important. If this question had been asked by a white man, I might actually have been offended, because the subtext of it would have been completely different. When an adult white man asks me “Where do you get your confidence?” the tacit assumption behind it is: “Because you don’t look like a person who should have any confidence. You’re not white, you’re not a man, and you’re not thin or conventionally attractive. How were you able to overlook these obvious shortcomings to feel confident? ”But this wasn’t coming from a white man. This was coming from a vulnerable young girl who thought that maybe, when I was her age, I too had faced similar obstacles. All she wanted was guidance, or maybe a little empathy. My answer was not very good. My tiredness betrayed me, and I think I said something like: “Wow, I don’t know. I think it’s from my parents always telling me I could do anything. I wish I had a better answer for you.” I wished her good luck, and she nodded politely and said thank you. When I get asked the same question over and over for years, the words of my answer begin to lose their meaning, even for me. Talking about confidence has become, to me, like listening to the flight attendant go through the in-flight passenger safety announcements. I could be leafing through a copy of American Way as I speak. I open my mouth and glib phrases like “supportive parents” and “strong sense of self” leak out. People seem mollified, but who knows? Maybe they are tuning me out too.As I watched her walk back to her seat, a wave of guilty regret hit me. This girl had done a lot to summon up the courage to ask a question, and she didn’t even want anything in return other than my honest answer. She didn’t want a selfie or for me to read her script, or to call her cousin’s friend who loved The Office so she could tell me, “No, I loved Office Space. Were you in that? ” She just wanted me to give her practical advice, and I answered in a way that was technically true but did not offer a lot of insight. And everyone had been fine with it.And that really sucks. Because then why am I even speaking on panels in the first place? So this essay is for that girl who went out of her way to be vulnerable in front of so many people, to whom I gave such a shitty, unhelpful response. Because I’ve thought about it now and I have my real answer. Hopefully she hasn’t stopped liking me and moved on to Laverne Cox, though if she did, how could I blame her? She seems inspirational as hell and her legs are like whoa. For the record, I, like everyone else, have had moments when I felt unattractive and stupid and unskilled. When I started at The Office, I had zero confidence. Whenever Greg Daniels came into the room to talk to our small group of writers, I was so nervous that I would raise and lower my chair involuntarily, like a tic. Finally, weeks in, writer Mike Schur put his hand on my arm and said, gently, “You have to stop.” Years later I realized that the way I had felt during those first few months was correct. I didn’t deserve to be confident yet. I happen to believe that no one inherently deserves anything, except basic human rights, and not to have to watch an ad before you watch a trailer on YouTube. So here it is: Mindy Kaling’s No Fail, Always Works, Secret Guide to Confidence. This is why you spent your entire vacation reading this book instead of talking to your family.Confidence is just entitlement. Entitlement has gotten a bad rap because it’s used almost exclusively for the useless children of the rich, reality TV stars, and Conrad Hilton Jr., who gets kicked off an airplane for smoking pot in the lavatory and calling people peasants or whatever. But entitlement in and of itself isn’t so bad. Entitlement is simply the belief that you deserve something. Which is great. The hard part is, you’d better make sure you deserve it. So, how did I make sure that I deserved it?To answer that, I would like to quote from the Twitter bio of one of my favorite people, Kevin Hart. It reads:My name is Kevin Hart and I WORK HARD!!! That pretty much sums me up!!! Everybody Wants To Be Famous But Nobody Wants To Do The Work! HARD WORK; OR, THE THING NO ONE WANTS TO HEAR ABOUTPeople talk about confidence without ever bringing up hard work. That’s a mistake. I know I sound like some dour older spinster chambermaid on Downton Abbey who has never felt a man’s touch and whose heart has turned to stone, but I don’t understand how you could have self-confidence if you don’t do the work.

Editorial Reviews

“Kaling has written a second book that’s funnier, sharper and more confident than her 2011 collection of personal essays and pop culture riffs called Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns).  Even the title of that initial effort implied that Kaling was trying to find her place; the tone of this new one announces that she’s found it and is more than comfortable inviting people to spend time with her there.”—Washington Post“Funny, thoughtful essays and anecdotes written in the star’s trademark voice. But this time around, things are just little more grown-up…This is Kaling at the height of her power.”—USA Today “Mindy Kaling may be gearing up for the fourth season of her TV show, The Mindy Project, but that didn't deter her from writing another wildly entertaining and completely relatable book… Her first memoir, Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns), spent time on several best-seller lists. Why Not Me? will certainly follow in its footsteps.”—Associated Press“Hilarious…Kaling knows her strengths, and plays to them brilliantly…Aside from that effortlessly conversational tone and her pitch-perfect humor, Kaling’s biggest strength here is curatorial. She gives us the candy we came for – the advice, the anecdotes, the straight talk on body image – but sprinkles in something extra.”—Entertainment Weekly, A-“Why Not Me? is all that we've come to expect from the creator and star of The Mindy Project: refreshing, confident, genuine, and, yes, absolutely hilarious.” —Refinery29 “…insightful personal essays from one of Hollywood's cleverest writers… Intrepid and often irreverent, Kaling humbly probes her own triumphs and defeats with laugh-out-loud results”. —Kirkus Reviews“Kaling's irreverent take on life is both uproariously funny and dead-on…Advice on a variety of topics—including why extensions make everyone more beautiful and how the world needs to start assuming that all young women are confident—make this an empowering and entertaining read.”—Publishers Weekly
