Indigo Love of Reading Foundation

To our Love of Reading Community,

We wanted to send out an update regarding the Indigo Love of Reading Foundation’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. This unprecedented event is impacting every single child, family and community in Canada. For those experiencing poverty and other forms of marginalization, those impacts are compounded. We urge everyone in our network to stay up to date with the latest public health announcements and do everything you can to reduce risk for yourself and for those who are most vulnerable at this time.

In the wake of school closures across the country, there will be delays in the regularly scheduled granting programs facilitated by the Love of Reading Foundation. If you applied to the 2020 Literacy Fund Grant, your application is still under review. You will receive an email update shortly with an updated timeline, but no further steps need to be taken.

We have also made the difficult decision to postpone the launch of our Adopt-A-School grant application, which was set to launch this month. Given our temporary retail store closures and school closures we may need to reimagine how this program will look in the year ahead, and more details will be shared as this situation unfolds.

We are committed to doing everything in our power to ensure that once schools are re-opened and school libraries once again become safe places for students to congregate, we will go above and beyond to support schools to reset and get back to normal. In the meantime, we will also double down our efforts to support parents and educators as they seek out innovative and creative ways to promote literacy while children are at home.

We truly believe that books have the power to build community, promote empathy, to offer solace during difficult times and perhaps most importantly to spark joy. Now more than ever we need all of these things. The Indigo Love of Reading Foundation remains committed to promoting children’s literacy and putting books into the hands of Canadian children who need them the most. We will continue to do this now and for many years to come.
