She annihilates standardized tests and the bad guys.
Genie Lo is one among droves of Ivy-hopeful overachievers in her sleepy Bay Area suburb. You know, the type who wins. When she’s not crushing it at volleyball or hitting the books, Genie is typically working on how to crack the elusive Harvard entry code.

But when her hometown comes under siege from Hellspawn straight out of Chinese folklore, her priorities are dramatically rearranged. Enter Quentin Sun, a mysterious new kid in class who becomes Genie’s self-appointed guide to battling demons. While Genie knows Quentin only as an attractive transfer student with an oddly formal command of the English language, in another reality he is Sun Wukong, the mythological Monkey King incarnate—right down to the furry tail and penchant for peaches.

Suddenly, acing the SATs is the least of Genie’s worries. The fates of her friends, family, and the entire Bay Area all depend on her summoning an inner power that Quentin assures her is strong enough to level the very gates of Heaven. But every second Genie spends tapping into the secret of her true nature is a second in which the lives of her loved ones hang in the balance.
F. C. Yee grew up in New Jersey and went to school in New England. His first book with Abrams, The Epic Crush of Genie Lo, released in 2017 to critical acclaim and four starred reviews. He currently lives and writes in Denver, Colorado.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Golly, this was fun. This is urban fantasy in a way that I haven't seen done before. In most urban fantasy novels, the guy is "dangerous" and broody and enigmatic and somehow, the heroine ends up irresistibly drawn to him, and he to her, even though they try to push each other away, or one tries to push the other away, or whatever. And okay, The Epic Crush of Genie Lo has some of that love-denial stuff in it, but it's done to such a comic effect that I can actually appreciate it. The two leading characters are great. Genie is a BS-free, hilariously snarky, self-aware, flawed heroine. Quentin is shorter than Genie by a lot (ROMANCE RULE BROKEN! :D) and is a lovably obnoxious, friendly bouncy-ball of a person. The romance between them is endearing, if a little accelerated around the middle of the book. Chinese folklore also isn't often explored in urban fantasy, but Yee brings it forth in a way that, in keeping with other elements of the story, is comic and makes it seem familiar. But this doesn't detract from the stakes and the sense of danger and power. Another thing that I really think I need to note is that the pacing is crisp, and the chapter/mid-chapter cutoff points are pitch-perfect: always leaving off on a zinger of a note, with no awkward transitions. A lot of authors don't execute those well, so kudos to Mr. Yee for pulling that off. Even though I really enjoyed this book, my absolute delight with it waned as it went on. It leaned a little too heavily on certain plot tropes, which contrasts with the rest of the story's originality. I'll definitely be checking out the sequel, though!

This was the kind of book that had me smiling almost the entire time, and actually laughing out loud throughout. It was just so fun to read. I really really really hope that there will be a sequel! I want to read more about Genie!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Action packed, funny and unique! With very odd Chinese folklore and Chinese language sprinkled throughout, this story was surprisingly easy to read! The author gave the characters authentic voices in regards to being a teenager today, especially when it came to the stress of preparing for a higher education. I like Genie Lo because of her quips and her need to do the right thing, even if begrudgingly. The story clipped along at a decent pace and the storyline was action packed and never boring!

Editorial Reviews

"Fast-paced action is offset with moments of introspection as Genie is forced to decide what matters most. Ultimately, Genie epitomizes the type of kick-ass heroine promised by the book’s cover—one who uses her wits and brawn in her battles."
