about

Now a major motion picture
Stephen King’s terrifying, classic #1 New York Times bestseller, “a landmark in American literature” (Chicago Sun-Times)—about seven adults who return to their hometown to confront a nightmare they had first stumbled on as teenagers…an evil without a name: It.

Welcome to Derry, Maine. It’s a small city, a place as hauntingly familiar as your own hometown. Only in Derry the haunting is real.

They were seven teenagers when they first stumbled upon the horror. Now they are grown-up men and women who have gone out into the big world to gain success and happiness. But the promise they made twenty-eight years ago calls them reunite in the same place where, as teenagers, they battled an evil creature that preyed on the city’s children. Now, children are being murdered again and their repressed memories of that terrifying summer return as they prepare to once again battle the monster lurking in Derry’s sewers.

Readers of Stephen King know that Derry, Maine, is a place with a deep, dark hold on the author. It reappears in many of his books, including Bag of Bones, Hearts in Atlantis, and 11/22/63. But it all starts with It.

“Stephen King’s most mature work” (St. Petersburg Times), “It will overwhelm you… to be read in a well-lit room only” (Los Angeles Times).
Stephen King was born in Portland, Maine, on September 21, 1947. After graduating with a Bachelor's degree in English from the University of Maine at Orono in 1970, he became a teacher. His spare time was spent writing short stories and novels. King's first novel would never have been published if not for his wife. She removed the firs...

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Worth a read It was a little slow at first but eventually it all caught up. It was a great book and was totally worth reading

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A little rough. While I will give this book a good overall rating - because Stephen King is an amazing horror genius - I will also warn you, this book is a little rough. Set at a little bit of a slow pace Stephen King takes an excruciatingly long route to describe some situations. Which can tend to drag on. This book took me a rather long time to finish, and trust me I like to read and normally run through books no problem. However Stephen Kings need to describe things in such detail can be both intriguing but also annoying. Great book, sometimes hard to get into though.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beyond my expectations This is a book I've been wanting to read for 20 yrs. It wasn't until a year or so ago that I started reading Stephen King books. I always saw them as too daunting - and at over 1000 pages It is certainly that. "It" held up to my 20 yr expectations- the characters, the pace and the story itself. I started by audiobook (read/verbally acted expertly by Steven Weber - he played Jack Torrence in the tv-adaptation of The Shining). Between my availability to listen I continued to read the paperback, switching back and forth from audio to reading (something I only do when I can't wait to continue the story once my headphones come off). A favorite line from the book: "Her breath was the smell of long-dead things burst wide open by the gases of their own decay." You can practically smell the image. The reader travels between 1958 and 1985 through out the entire story. As a parent of a 10 yr old boy I found the 1958 story-line especially intense. The kids battle bullies, grownups who don't "see", fear, personal demons and ultimately It. It's a story about being 11, about becoming autonomous, about friendship and never needing to face your fears alone. Truly an "epic".

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Classic What a huge book! It was an inspiring tale showing that the bonds of friendship have the ability to overcome true evil, which I really enjoyed! What really turned me away was the racism and abuse featured throughout much of the book. I understand that they are real issues and it goes to show just how much It is able to corrupt Derry, but I still found it to be excessive.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from His Best One of his best works! I've read this as well as many other of his works and I can tell you this one kept me intrigued and wanting more.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of King's best work! It took me a good while to finish reading this book, but I enjoyed it. There were some things that were...questionable and graphic but it was a great read!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A classic I recently re-read IT and aside from one thing at the end everything holds up and is an excellent ride from beginning to end. Def a King story everyone should try once.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fantastic. King is an exceptional writer. His unique strings of words grabs you from the very beginning. Well worth it. Hardcover is recommended, with over 1100 pages, paperback is hard to manage.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Pretty Good! I really liked this novel though a lot of it was not needed. Some parts it was very graphic, or it said some things that were quite... unpleasent. It is a very long book but I would say the first quarter did not have anything to do with the clown. However, when it got towards the scary parts, it was really good. I never thought I would really be able to picture horror scenes in books, but it was clear, and I was content with the read.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Scary and Fast - Paced I borrowed the book from one of my friends after watching the movie and I have to say it was wayyyy BETTER! I loved the book it was captivating from the beginning to the end and had an air of suspense consistently. Had a few late night scares hear and their so if any of you get scared easily, like me, don't read it at night. I highly recommend this book, couldn't put it down.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Creepy yet truly amazing I can admit that I did get very creeped out by reading this book but as soon as i was done with it, I needed more.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Captivating Stephen King does an amazing job captivating readers by creating empathy for all characters. The changing point of view and timeline kept the interest and suspense high.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Scary and Full of Suspense I read this long before the movies came out and it scared the daylight out of me! Add in the original movie and I avoided sewers, dark and anything clown related for years! Great read in classic King writing. #plumreview

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very Captivating My mom bought me this book on one of our days out in September and I started reading it right away even though I had multiple other books on the go. Very captivating but the size is very intimidating! Steven King is one of the best authors I've read (and I read a lot) and his books always leave you wanting more. Seeing both IT movies multiple times before reading the book put the images of the children/adults in my head so I wasn't truly able to make them my own. Cannot wait to read more of what Steven King has to offer!
Date published: 2018-07-17
Rated 3 out of 5 by from very good only took me three month to finish this huge book. i have to say it was better than the new movie they made, but was a little disappointed at the fact there was alot of mythical things in it. very slow pace, some parts were boring to read so be prepared for that
Date published: 2018-07-16
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not my favorite.... Sorry to say I did not like this book very much. I know Stephen King is a very famous author and all of my friends absolutely adore him and his books. This was the first book i'd read by Stephen King and just found it to be very slow paced and overly detailed. I will say that he did an absolutely incredible job at building up his characters, I loved each and everyone of them and found myself fully emotionally invested in their friendship. I cannot say I found this book to be scary.
Date published: 2018-07-12
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing classic I have read almost every Stephen King book and this is one of my favourites! The new movie is great too

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The best from the best one of the first stephen king books i read and im so glad that i did. The best coming of age story out there. The size may be a bit offputting but its worth it in the end #plumreview

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My firzst This was one of the first King novels I ever read and it thoroughly scared me. I have re read it countless times and is one of my favorites. you feel the fear of each character in the various scenarios they go through. in depth and descriptive as always

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Long but well worth it! This was one of the first Stephen King books I've ever read, and was honestly intimidated by the size, but my goodness was it worth it! The incredible detail just sucked me into the story, and the way he jumped back and forth between times to tell the tale really intrigued me! Saw it after the movie, and as always, the book is better!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Would recommend I am a big fan of Stephen King and have read alot of his work. I really enjoyed IT, as someone who had watched the movie as a kid, and watched the new one in 2017, I was looking forward to reading the source material. It did not disappoint

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This book was a masterpice! I read this book a few days ago, and it was just so much better than I expected. It was amazing; the transitions between the past and the present, the stylistic and figurative descriptions, and each and every character brought this book together to form the masterpiece that it is. I recommend it to everyone who enjoys a good book!
Date published: 2018-06-07
Rated 5 out of 5 by from The best book I've ever read IT is the best book I have ever had the pleasure of reading. Its scary, but its also a great story about friendship and coming together and the ending is just brilliant. This book kept me occupied and turning pages with intensity for months, don't be scared by the length, its well worth it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fun! I really enjoy Stephen King's books. I read this as a kid and got really scared. I'd forgotten most of it and so it was really fun to read it again as an adult.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from It was ok, but I wouldn’t read it again This book was interesting to say the least. I remember trying to read it before i got to the point where mike encounters IT and then stopped because I couldn’t get into it. Now that i have read the entire book it was good but not very scary and very disturbing in parts. I think theres a lot of things in the book that didnt need to be there. Mostly the sexual things it just made the book have a gross effect to it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from RJGM Oh my GOODNESS, this book is long. I mean, I knew it was long. And I've read long books before -- I read The Stand in high school, and all of Les Misérables in one week during an exceptionally boring job. But I feel like this one took me NINE HUNDRED YEARS to get through. Not that it's boring! It is absolutely not boring. But it's also nowhere near as scary as I expected...? It was gory, sure, but I didn't have nightmares or anything. I guess I have to continue my quest for a book scarier than The Shining (recs appreciated, ha). The thing about the length: I honestly don't know what I would cut? At first I was a little annoyed that every.single.character. got a POV section, but everything worked together to build up the mythos of the monster and the world of Derry. There was nothing unnecessary, though I do agree with some critics that King errs on the side of overdescription. Maybe the segments could've been edited down a bit, but I can't imagine this book without any one of its chapters. I enjoyed reading it (haha), mostly. If it weren't so long, I might've given it three stars, just because it wasn't quite what I expected... sunk cost, I guess, gave it a bonus star. The book may not have been that scary, but one thing is for certain: I will never, ever, ever watch the movie!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from dense this book took me an incredibly long time for me to read. i really enjoyed getting to know the characers of this book. the characters are defintely what made this book for me
Date published: 2018-03-28
Rated 3 out of 5 by from ok I found this an easy book to read. SK likes to build his characters so the book is a bit dragged out because of this. I would not read this book again, and would tell anyone new to SK to try something different for their first SK read.
Date published: 2018-03-26
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved it! I loved this book. So many emotions! It made me cry and afraid to sleep at night all within the span of a few chapters. I loved the characters and how they developed. IT was a page turner for sure. It took a while to get into but once you do, you literally can not put it down! Highly recommend it!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good but very long. Dragged on in some parts and it was a little hard to follow at times but overall it's really good.
Date published: 2018-02-17
Rated 1 out of 5 by from A long and windy book I enjoyed a lot of King’s book, but I did not enjoy this one. I wanted to like it, but it was too much; too much going on and it never tied together flawlessly. I did not like the part where the children are trying to leave the sewers and they do something to calm themselves. I found that inappropriate. The theme of the novel is supposed to be about friendship, but this part distorts and perverts the idea of friendship.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of the best of all time "It" is by far in my top 5 Stephen King novels. This book is very, very long but very worth it. It's easy to stay intrigued by this novel because there are so many different characters' story lines to follow. I bawled like a baby at the end just because I didn't want it to be over!
Date published: 2017-12-27
Rated 4 out of 5 by from It's a Big Book. Perhaps I'm not in the best position to give an overall review of IT, as I am far from finishing the book. IT is almost 1200 pages, but if you were as enthralled with the story and the mythos that is presented in the 1990 miniseries and 2017's film adaptation as I was, you too will be able to keep going. What's nice about King's narrative style is that he knows how to establish a world and makes characters you can sympathize or identify with. This is a Stephen King classic novel that, while not a 'must-read', is still worth checking out if big books are your thing. If you liked the movie, maybe check this out.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 1184 pages of chilling... A huge book that I just couldn't put down. King is the master of horror and suspense. After seeing and enjoying the movie I had to check out the source material and boy did it not let down. The book is, as with most cases, far superior. If you want to spend a few nights not sleeping pick this book up! #plumreview

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Classic!!! Not much to say about this behemoth of a book that hasn't already been said. It's definitely earned its place as a classic. The creepiness and tension are through the roof. The writing is flowing and elegant. It's got some messed up moments, but for the most part, I found the ending to be really endearing and heartfelt. There are definitely some moments that will stick with me for a long time, and I found it to be one of Stephen King's best. Not one to miss if you love horror!
Date published: 2017-11-03
Rated 5 out of 5 by from absolutely adored! Every book Stephen King has ever written has been the absolutely amazing. i reccomend this book to everyone i know
Date published: 2017-11-01
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not my fav and massive I struggled to get through this. Obviously, this is a well-known book but the amount of detail for everything made getting through this a very slow and boring process. I also didn't find it very horrific, mostly creepy. Personally, I needed more scary action rather than talk and the most cringe worthy scenes didn't involve the clown. If it weren't for the support of the audiobook I don't think I would have finished it.
Date published: 2017-10-28
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nothing beats classic King Read this when it first came out (I was 11) and re-reading really made me question my mothers parenting abilities. This book is creepy as heck. Love classic King.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great I am just getting into Stephen King. I started pretty late with Doctor Sleep (sequel to the Shinning) and fell in love. He has such a DESCRIPTIVE writing style. If there was a man watching the story from a window on a Saturday afternoon but has nothing to do with the story line - you will read about it! Then, chapters/100s of pages later, he makes relevance in the random details he made you read before. I have purchased at least 5 more King's since this one and can't wait to dig in

Stephan King has an amazing way of telling the story from a child perspective it gives me flash backs to my own childhood even though I grew up in a different era than the book takes place in. Definitely a monster of a book!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Classic This book is amazing, it is so large and full of information that you could read it over and over again and still find new and exciting parts of the story to feed your soul. I would recommend this not because of the new remake of the movie but because this book is a timeless classic that will surely give you goosebumps while also captivating the reader. The book is way better than either of the movies so regardless of if your a fan or not of them I would give the book a go!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Memories from my youth IT represents some of Stephen King's very best writing. As an avid reader of his work, IT for me, became the yardstick by which all of his other novels were measured.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Pretty good I liked this a lot more than I was expecting, except for the sewer scene (you know which one I'm talking about). I will admit that I found this to be longer than needed... But very good and interesting overall.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from reader beware, you're in for a scare Stephen King is hands down my favorite writer and while IT isn't my absolute favorite novel from him it is one of his best. It's a dark, unsettling story which has many moments that might upset the reader depending on their ability to handle disturbing scenarios. The characters are well developed, complex, and enjoyable. Given the graphic nature I would only recommend this one to adults who love a good scary story. It's a really great read for a dark and chilly fall evening

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very Scary I have read a few of King's other novels and didn't find them scary, but this one is extremely well done. I would have to take breaks from reading as it became too intense. While I disagree with the inclusion of certain parts of the plot, overall this was a good read. #plumreview

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Interesting. King has a way of making anything scary. I would probably read something he wrote with the title "The Haunted Toaster." I'm not afraid of clowns in the least, but this book was still a very creepy journey!
