about

"Jar of Hearts grabs you by the throat! The perfect blend of riveting characters, chilling details, and gasping twists in this standout thriller will keep you frantically reading until the explosive end." - Lisa Gardner, New York Times bestselling author of Right Behind You

. A Top 10 bestseller (CrimeReads) . A June 2018 LibraryReads pick .

This is the story of three best friends: one who was murdered, one who went to prison, and one who's been searching for the truth all these years . . .

When she was sixteen years old, Angela Wong-one of the most popular girls in school-disappeared without a trace. Nobody ever suspected that her best friend, Georgina Shaw, now an executive and rising star at her Seattle pharmaceutical company, was involved in any way. Certainly not Kaiser Brody, who was close with both girls back in high school.

But fourteen years later, Angela Wong's remains are discovered in the woods near Geo's childhood home. And Kaiser-now a detective with Seattle PD-finally learns the truth: Angela was a victim of Calvin James. The same Calvin James who murdered at least three other women.

To the authorities, Calvin is a serial killer. But to Geo, he's something else entirely. Back in high school, Calvin was Geo's first love. Turbulent and often volatile, their relationship bordered on obsession from the moment they met right up until the night Angela was killed.

For fourteen years, Geo knew what happened to Angela and told no one. For fourteen years, she carried the secret of Angela's death until Geo was arrested and sent to prison.

While everyone thinks they finally know the truth, there are dark secrets buried deep. And what happened that fateful night is more complex and more chilling than anyone really knows. Now the obsessive past catches up with the deadly present when new bodies begin to turn up, killed in the exact same manner as Angela Wong.

How far will someone go to bury her secrets and hide her grief? How long can you get away with a lie? How long can you live with it? Find out in Jennifer Hillier's Jar of Hearts.

JENNIFER HILLIER was born and raised in Toronto, Canada, lived in the Seattle area for years, and has just moved back to Toronto with her husband and son. Jennifer is the author of Wonderland, Creep, and Jar of Hearts.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Disappointing novel Jar of Hearts by Jennifer Hillier is set in Seattle, Washington. Fourteen years ago, Angela Wong disappeared without a trace and now her dismembered body has been found in the woods near Georgina “Geo” Shaw’s home. Detective Kaiser Brody, Geo’s best friend in high school, never suspected Geo was involved in such a heinous crime. They learn that Calvin James, Geo’s high school boyfriend, killed Angela and has since murdered three more women. Geo has kept the events of the night Angela was killed a secret, but, after reaching a plea deal, she testifies against Calvin at his trial. Geo is sentenced to five years at Hazelwood Correctional Institute. Towards the end of her stay she is visited by Kaiser and told that Calvin has escaped. Then new bodies start turning up in the woods killed in the exact manner at Angela. Geo is released, and she returns to her childhood home much to the neighbors’ dismay. As the body count rises, Geo recalls the events that led up to that fateful night. What really happened the night Angela died? Jar of Hearts had a good beginning that drew me in (the first third). After a while, though, the story took a downhill turn. The pace became slow and the story felt flat. I thought the story lacked depth and I found it to be predictable (reminded me of many other books that I have read). I wanted twists and turns that would surprise me and give me an OMG moment. The back and forth from the present to the past did not help. The characters lacked development and were one dimensional. I never felt the characters emotions (there should be hatred, anger, love, joy). I also wanted to know why Geo did the things she did. Geo is an unlikeable and unsympathetic character as were most of the individuals in the Jar of Hearts. I wanted to know why Geo was obsessed with Calvin (just one of my questions). Teenage naivete is an excuse that will only take a person so far. If a four-year-old knows the difference between right and wrong so should a teenager. I also felt Geo should have grown more as a person. One would hope that she would learn from her bad decisions and time in prison. The romance was unnecessary and did not add to the story. The ending was incomplete and anticlimactic. We are not given satisfactory answers that would wrap up the book and epilogue was unbelievable. I want to warn readers that the Jar of Hearts is a graphic story that contains extreme violence, crude comments, rape and foul language. Jar of Hearts was not the right book for me (I am in the minority on my opinion). Obtain a sample of the Jar of Hearts to see if it is it appeals to you. The cover for Jar of Hearts is beautiful and it is what drew me to the book.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A captivating story At 16, Georgina (aka "Geo") watched her boyfriend Calvin rape and murder her best friend Angela and then helped him dispose of Angela's body. While Geo goes on to have a productive life, over the next 14 years her poor choice at 16 continues to haunt her. Eventually arrested and sent to prison, after 5 years of incarceration she's released and is attempting to restart her life. The story is told from the perspective of Geo "then" and "now", and the reader becomes absorbed in Geo's life. A very good read.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good Read Georgina (Geo) Shaw was best friends in high school with Angela Wong. When the girls were in Grade 11, Geo’s boyfriend, Calvin James, kills Angela and with Geo’s assistance, buries her in the woods close to Geo’s family home. Fourteen years later, Angela’s body is found and the police connect Calvin and Geo to the murder. Geo takes a plea in exchange for testifying against Calvin and is sentenced to five years in jail. This is quite a come down in her life since she had managed to snag an executive job at a major pharmaceutical company along with a wealthy finance by the time she was arrested. Calvin escapes from custody and has been on the run for years. Angela completes her five year prison sentence and shortly before she is released, the body of a woman and small child is found buried in the woods close to where Angela’s body had been discovered. The police suspect that this is the work of Calvin who had by then, killed numerous other women. In the meantime, Geo returns to her father’s home and is not welcomed by neighbors or the community. This is the first book that I have read by this author and there were parts I really thought she did a good job on. Particularly with the time that Geo spent in jail. In so many other books I have read where the main character did a stint in jail, usually that part of the story is just glossed over. It was evident that the author had done some research so that she could flesh out this story line with accuracy and believability. I also enjoyed the twist near the end of the book. I did see it coming about 80% of the way into it, however, that isn’t too bad and I didn’t really mind that by that point I had figured out the truth. I would certainly consider reading another book by this author.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Stole my heart and made it race! Thank you to Netgalley, St. Martin’s Press and Jennifer Hillier for an ARC in exchange for an honest review. Meet Georgina Shaw, Geo to her friends. Beautiful, successful and on her way to jail for being an accessory to murder. Not just anyone, but charged for helping murder her best friend, Angela Wong, when they were just sixteen years old. What’s made it worse is that for fourteen years Georgina kept it a secret. She knew that her boyfriend killed Angela, she was there that night, but she lied to everyone around her and pretended that she knew nothing. Just imagine what she put Angela’s parents through pretending to grieve, all the while knowing that Angela was cut into little pieces and buried in the woods behind her house. She could have spared them the pain of wondering what happened to their daughter but Georgina decided to get on with her life, go to college and work her way up the corporate ladder. So successful at such a young age and to top it off she is even engaged to the head of the company. Oh Andrew, what will happen when he hears the news. And who walks into her boardroom to arrest her but her other best friend, Kaiser, the detective on the case. He has been chasing the “Sweetbay Strangler” for years. They would never have known Georgina was involved if the serial killer hadn’t turned out to be her boyfriend back in high school. Kaiser never like him, Calvin James, but then again he had been in love with Georgina ever since they were kids. Still, Calvin wasn’t a good influence on Georgina. He was older, controlling, but Georgina had never felt like that for anyone ever before in her whole life. Her head was turned upside down and she didn’t care if her grades were dropping, if she was losing her friends, or even, if Calvin sometime hit her. But Georgina has secrets and Calvin know what they are. She can never let anyone know what really happened that night. This story is told in a multi perspective voice between Kaiser and Georgina. We get to see the relationship of the three friends in high school. Angela was more beautiful, more popular, but definitely more bitchy. In the present we go through Georgina being convicted, her life in jail and life after being released. Calvin, who was supposed to spend the rest of his life in jail, escapes. New murders are taking place, even more gruesome than the originals. Has Calvin escalated? Is he in contact with Georgina? Kaiser might have been the skinny guy who was put in the friend zone, but he is all grown up, confident and handsome, and he wants the whole truth. I have been tiring of this kind of storytelling but this time it was done so well. The story flowed and it wasn’t like chapter 1 - Georgina, chapter 2 - Kaiser, blah blah blah. It would switch voices but the story didn’t stop. The excitement and suspense was allowed to build. There were twists and turns and even though I could see the direction that it was going, I was still wanting to get to the end. There were a lot of moving parts, covered lots of different periods and many characters, but somehow the story never suffered. It all served to enhance the plot. If you love psychological thrillers, this is one for you. It was dark enough without being disturbing, edgy but with enough story to fill the spaces, characters you care about and want to know more about and a level of detail that made it believable, created depth without getting bogged down. I enjoyed the writing so much I am going to check out Jennifer Hillier’s other novels.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A Deeply Twisted Psychological Thriller I LOVED this book - once I picked it up I could NOT put it back down, it will devour you whole. Dark, gritty and completely twisted, this is every single thing that a good psychological thriller should be, and then some. Geo, Angela and Kai were best friends in high school, until Angela went missing. Fourteen years later, one of them is in prison and one of them is trying to unravel what really happened the night Angela disappeared. Everything about this book is bang on - from the characters who are wonderfully and thoughtfully flawed, to the movement of the story between present day and their high school past, topped off with high tension and twists that keep coming at you. I completely enjoyed the pace that kept the story moving along without every feeling like a plot point had stalled out, and absolutely kept me guessing. This should be on every thriller lovers must read list for summer. It will keep you up well into the night. TRIGGER WARNING: This book features very graphic scenes of rape, and if that is a trigger for you, please proceed carefully with this read.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A 16 Yr old's decisions..... The decisions of a sixteen year old girl result in a lifetime of complications. This intelligently written psychological thriller was mesmerizing. I will never look at cinnamon hearts without thinking of this book! At 16, Georgina Shaw is raising herself. While her ER doctor, single parent father is working to save lives hers is spinning out of control. Fourteen years after the disappearance of her BFF, Angela, Geo finds herself serving a five year prison sentence - her successful career and high society wedding disappear. The plot twists seem inevitable as the story behind Geo's life decisions and experiences are revealed in flash backs. I was completely absorbed in the tragedy that is Geo's life yet never gave up hope that it would improve when she could find her way back to what should have been if only her mother hadn't died young. I am definitely finding Jennifer Hillier's previous four novels while I wait for her next one! I volunteered to read an ARC from St. Martins Press through Net Galley.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved it! Gripping, thrilling, suspensefull!! Wow! Just WOW! This book was incredible! From the very first page pulling you in and keeping you on the edge of your seat throughout the entire book, this book was AMAZING!! Had me reading late into the night to find out what would happen next. I finished this book in just over a day. That’s how great it was! Kaiser (Kai), Georgina (Geo) and Angela are all best friends in highschool. They do everything together, that is until Georgina meets Calvin – a good looking, older man who has a keen interest in Georgina. Georgina and Calvin seem inseparable, they do everything together, and soon Kai and Angela feel left out and forgotten about. This story was told from two different points of view – Georgina (Geo) and Kaiser (Kai) from different timelines – present and past. The story unfolds and you learn bit by bit what happened on that fateful night many years ago. Who was responsible? Who is to blame? I love a book that captivates it’s audience from the very beginning, and this book did that for me. This is a must read for fans of suspense and thrillers!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from BONE CHILLING I'll start off by stating that I am a HUGE fan of Jennifer Hillier's books, I have read all of them.  So when I heard she was releasing Jar of Hearts, I knew it had to be added to the top of my TBR list.  I expected nothing less than greatness and after finishing it today, my expectation hit the nail on the head. She did it again....Jennifer Hillier, you write a damn good thriller! This book had it all the ingredients of a perfect thriller and gave me chills during most parts. Some of the details are graphic and intense and may make you uncomfortable; if you’re looking for chills this book delivers without a doubt. The story unfolds through multiple points of view, alternating between the past and present day.  A murder that is covered up by a lovesick teenaged girl, Georgina Shaw (Geo), and her "bad boy" boyfriend, comes to haunt Geo as an adult fourteen years later, in unimaginable ways.  I found myself both hating and feeling sorry for Geo and I'm still on the fence about her after finishing this book.  The web of lies that Geo spins over the course of fourteen years is unforgivable and unmistakably criminal.   WARNING:  Some of the details are graphic and intense and may make you uncomfortable; but if you’re looking for chills this book delivers without a doubt. If you are able to get past some of the graphic content, and enjoy a good thriller, I highly recommend this book.  So glad I had the opportunity of reading this in advance of its June release date.
