The irresistible companion to the #1 New York Times bestseller Dumplin’, soon to be a major motion picture starring Danielle Macdonald and Jennifer Aniston!

Millie Michalchuk has gone to fat camp every year since she was a little girl. Not this year. This year she has new plans to chase her secret dream of being a newscaster—and to kiss the boy she’s crushing on.

Callie Reyes is the pretty girl who is next in line for dance team captain and has the popular boyfriend. But when it comes to other girls, she’s more frenemy than friend.

When circumstances bring the girls together over the course of a semester, they surprise everyone (especially themselves) by realizing that they might have more in common than they ever imagined.

A story about unexpected friendship, romance, and Texas-size girl power, this is another winner from Julie Murphy.

Julie Murphy's debut contemporary young adult novel, Side Effects May Vary, is out from Balzer + Bray/HarperCollins and was well-received by Kirkus, School Library Journal, VOYA, Booklist, Seventeen Magazine, and Teen Vogue. Rated 4 out of 5 by from Funny & Unique After reading (and loving) Dumplin', I was so excited to hear that there was a sequel in the works. I'm happy to say that I really enjoyed this sequel. Maybe not as much as I enjoyed Dumplin', but close to it. These characters were diverse, relatable, and mostly a good representation of what it's like to be a teenager. There may have been more dramatic moments that may not be particularly realistic, but for the most part, I thought it was was pretty realistic. The characters were also diverse in body types, ethnicities, genders, and sexual orientations. I definitely respect that because I think that is more of an accurate representation of reality than having everyone be the same. It was an enjoyable, fast-paced read that I really did like. Julie Murphy has become one of my "auto-buy" authors and this novel certainly didn't disappoint. I did have some issues with the novel but as a whole, it was a very good read.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not as good as Dumplin' This is a tough one for me to review because I loved the overall message and the rom-com references, it was a little too sweet for me. So much that certain characters seemed like caricatures at times, and sometimes a little younger than they actually are or seemed in Dumplin'. At times it felt more like juvenile fiction than young adult. I feel almost badly for not rating it higher because for body positivity it would get 5 stars, but I'm probably only one of a few who were put off by the romance aspect of it. With Dumplin' included, all of the main characters have boyfriends or love interests and I'm not quite sure what I think about that. On the one hand I'm happy that they all got their love story, but on the other hand it seems a little unrealistic for it to happen to all of them at the same time. It's an homage to romantic comedies and they all deserve their own love story, but even though it wasn't the message being sent, I would have liked to see someone who didn't need to have a boyfriend to be happy. Overall it was enjoyable to read, but I did find myself cringing in places... but that probably won't be a problem if you love HEAs.
