about

Finally, the solution to the #1 reason we don’t exercise: time. Everyone has one minute.

A decade ago, Martin Gibala was a young researcher in the field of exercise physiology—with little time to exercise. That critical point in his career launched a passion for high-intensity interval training (HIIT), allowing him to stay in shape with just a few minutes of hard effort. It also prompted Gibala to conduct experiments that helped launch the exploding science of ultralow-volume exercise. Now that he’s the worldwide guru of the science of time-efficient workouts, Gibala’s first book answers the ultimate question: How low can you go?

Gibala’s fascinating quest for the answer makes exercise experts of us all. His work demonstrates that very short, intense bursts of exercise may be the most potent form of workout available. Gibala busts myths (“it’s only for really fit people”), explains astonishing science (“intensity trumps duration”), lays out time-saving life hacks (“exercise snacking”), and describes the fascinating health-promoting value of HIIT (for preventing and reversing disease). Gibala’s latest study found that sedentary people derived the fitness benefits of 150 minutes of traditional endurance training with an interval protocol that involved 80 percent less time and just three minutes of hard exercise per week.

Including the eight best basic interval workouts as well as four microworkouts customized for individual needs and preferences (you may not quite want to go all out every time), The One-Minute Workout solves the number-one reason we don’t exercise: lack of time. Because everyone has one minute.
Martin Gibala, Ph.D., is a professor and chair of the kinesiology department at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. His research on the physiological and health benefits of high-intensity interval training has attracted immense scientific attention and worldwide media coverage. Gibala has published more than 100 peer-reviewed art...

Rated 3 out of 5 by from A Bit Dry I guess with the word science in the title I should have known it would be going through alot of research information. At least at the back of the book there is some practical information on workouts. Sounds like burpees and bootcamp style workouts are the way to go. You just don't have to do it as long to get the benefits. At least that is my takeaway from the book.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing solution to staying healthy with a busy lifestyle My husband and I both work from home and find it hard to fit in heading to the gym -- which makes this book an amazing game-changer. We can fit these short workouts into our daily routines, and the legitimate science behind this well-researched and proven message is great. A definite must buy for a healthier lifestyle!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Work harder, get better outcomes I really enjoyed this book. It has a solid foundation in science but it was also really approachable and easy to read for someone without a science background. I think that I am the target market for this book as I am trying to do a few different kinds of fitness with limited time. I have already incorporated some of this methodology into my workouts. Definitely worth a read.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Finally! Had you told me that reading this book would make me excited about burpees, I would have told you that you were crazy. But it did. I would recommend this book to anyone who feels like they don’t have time to exercise! For a busy mom, it is a lifesaver.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome book! This book is really enlightening and speaks to integrating work-outs into busy lifestyles. I loved watching the accompanying videos as well. Really well written and for someone who has mainly relied on long distance running for the majority of my fitness, it inspired me to look at different ways of achieving my health and fitness goals. Highly recommended!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great book! A very helpful and inspirational book. Between working full time and raising two (soon to be three) young children, I have found that my personal fitness and activity levels were the first casualty. This book has shown that doesn't have to be the case. A few exercises first thing in the morning while the kids eat breakfast have made a huge difference, and really get my mind and body ready to take on the day.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Feel the burn! I found this book really helpful to understand the science of high intensity interval training. I've read a number of other books on the topic but found this one well balanced between practical applications and scientific support. While I'm not a scientist I found the explanations very comprehensive and easy to follow. After trying a few sprint workouts I was surprised to experience both the positive mental and physical benefits. While I still go to the gym (creature of habit) and enjoy an occasional long run I find these workouts a great substitute when I'm short on time. Thank you!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Well written and illuminating book on fitness I bought this and read it and was happy to learn that fitness does not have to take hours each week. It is clearly written in Laymen's terms and Dr Gibala and Chris Shulgan make it easy to understand. It should encourage us to use the methods to improve our fitness levels

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Getting Fit in February! This book came at the perfect time – just as I’m losing steam on my New Year’s resolutions to exercise three times a week (but already motherhood and work is getting in the way). It’s inspirational because it shows you how easy it is to get in shape even when you have no time to get to the gym (or even change into workout clothes!). It gives you examples and exercises -- as well as all the science to back up why it works, and proves you don't need a lot of time to get a great workout. Martin Gibala is a scientist and the so-called guru of time-efficient exercise, which means he’s conducted more than a decade of experiments designed to determine how to get the biggest fitness benefits from exercise in the shortest amount of time. The book is the best of the best in terms of his cutting-edge research. It’s written in a super fun easy to read way, and even though it's full of science I never felt like I didn't understand what he was talking about. It was so inspiring to read, and I also felt that, unlike a lot of self-help books where you just want to flip through to the workouts, I wanted to read every single page because of the information provided (though there is a chapter at the end with examples of workouts you can do everywhere). It's perfect for busy people who want to work out but feel like there just aren’t enough hours in the day. I’m totally recommending this book to all of my mom-friends who like me can find every other reason they don't have time to work out but want to. I'm already seeing results in just a few weeks. So good!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for the working parent I have two small children and a full time job to go along with them like most people. Time comes at a premium so my exercise regiment had fallen off. I found Dr.Gibala's book to be helpful to bring back the energy lost throughout the day with a small time commitment.
